Job Summary:As a Biomedical Simulation Engineer, you will play a key role in translating medical scenarios into high-fidelity simulations that closely replicate real-world physiological processes. Working from clinician-designed scenarios, you will model the effects of various insults (e.g., trauma, infections, or disease processes) on the body’s systems, and simulate how medications and interventions stabilise or alter the patient’s physiological state. By carefully implementing these complex scenarios in C++ or similar programming language, you’ll help create dynamic and realistic learning experiences that allow medical students to explore the consequences of clinical decisions in a safe, controlled environment.

This role is a unique opportunity to blend your knowledge of physiology and modelling with an impactful mission: empowering the next generation of healthcare professionals through immersive and realistic simulation experiences.

Key Responsibilities:Model Physiological Insults : Implement scenarios that replicate the effects of various insults (such as trauma, infection, or disease) on different bodily systems, ensuring that simulations accurately portray their physiological impact.Simulate Medication Effects : Design and test models that show how medications interact with physiological systems to stabilise patients, adjusting parameters to reflect realistic pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic responses.Implement Clinical Interventions : Develop simulations to demonstrate the impact of medical interventions (e.g., ventilator support, fluid resuscitation) on a patient’s physiological state, ensuring that responses are consistent with real-world outcomes.Collaborate with Clinicians for Scenario Refinement : Work closely with clinicians to recommend adjustments to scenarios for improved educational outcomes, tailoring responses to enhance learning effectiveness.Validate Models with Experimental Data : Use experimental and clinical data to validate that models and simulations are accurate, and make adjustments to improve alignment with real-world physiological processes.Update Models for New Features and Conditions : Regularly assess model limitations and expand capabilities by introducing new features, drugs, and conditions to keep simulations relevant and scientifically sound.

Qualifications:Bachelor’s Degree (essential) : A degree in Biomedical Engineering, Biotechnology, Medical Physics, Computer Science, or a related field with a strong foundation in programming and physiology.Master’s Degree or PhD (preferred) : Advanced degrees in fields like Biomedical Engineering, Physiology, Pharmacology, Computational Biology, or Clinical Simulation are highly valued. A focus on modelling or simulation during postgraduate studies can be a significant advantage.Medical Background (beneficial but not essential) : An MBBS degree with an interest in medical simulation and technology can be an asset for understanding clinical nuances. Alternatively, candidates with clinical training (such as BPT in Physiotherapy or M.Pharm in Pharmacology) who have transitioned into modelling or simulation roles could also be strong fits.

Technical Skills:Strong knowledge of C++ or other programming language is essential, with additional experience in Python or MATLAB for data analysis and validation being advantageous.Experience in mathematical and computational modelling of physiological systems or drug effects, such as PK/PD (pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics) modelling, is highly relevant. Experience with simulation platforms like Simulink, or other biomedical simulation tools is a plus.Familiarity with validating models using experimental or clinical data, possibly with experience in machine learning, data analytics, or statistical software, will be beneficial.

Domain knowledge:Human Physiology and Pharmacology : A strong foundation in human physiology and pharmacology is necessary for accurately simulating medical scenarios. Familiarity with the effects of diseases, medications, and interventions on the body will be essential for this role.Clinical Understanding : While clinical experience is not required, familiarity with medical workflows, disease processes, and common interventions (such as trauma care, drug therapy, and medical procedures) can enhance the candidate's ability to create realistic simulations.

Professional experience:Previous experience in physiological modelling, healthcare simulation, or similar roles is often preferred.Candidates with a background in research, especially involving biomedical modelling, physiology, or pharmacology, are often well-suited to this kind of role.
