Job Description - Operational MSSQL Database Administrator

We are looking for a seasoned Operational MSSQL Database Administrator (DBA) for one of our client - a UK Product Firm with at least 10 years of experience in managing Microsoft SQL Server databases. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in the core aspects of database administration and a keen understanding of database structures, principles, and best practices. While experience with AWS is desirable, it is not a requirement.

As a part of our team, the DBA will be responsible for ensuring the performance, availability, and security of our MS SQL databases. Additionally, the DBA will provide expertise and guidance to our developers on SQL query and stored procedure writing to optimize performance and effectiveness.

Responsibilities:

  • Managing MS SQL databases through multiple product lifecycle environments, from development to mission-critical production systems.
  • Assisting developers with complex query tuning and schema refinement.
  • Providing guidance to developers on SQL best practices for writing effective queries and stored procedures.
  • Ensuring high levels of performance, availability, sustainability, and security of databases.
  • Analysing, solving, and correcting issues in real time, providing end-to-end problem resolution.
  • Refining and automating regular processes, tracking issues, and documenting changes.
  • Assessing system health and performance regularly and optimizing as necessary.
  • Collaborating with other team members and stakeholders.
  • Managing and testing database backup and recovery systems and processes.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of 10 years MS SQL Server Administration experience.
  • Experience with Performance Tuning and Optimization (PTO) using native monitoring and troubleshooting tools.
  • Knowledge of High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) options for MSSQL Server.
  • Experience in implementing operational automation.
  • Knowledge of indexes, index management, and statistics.
  • Understanding of SQL Server's clustering architecture is a plus.
  • Experience with cloud platforms (especially AWS) is desirable but not required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • BS/MS degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related subject or equivalent work experience.
