Director of Product Design

Okta is seeking an experienced and visionary Director of Product Design. At Okta, we're building a world where anyone can safely use any technology. As a Director of Product Design for Okta, you'll be accountable for the entire design practice at the Okta India Innovation Center. You will be a trusted partner to engineering and product, taking an active role in shaping product strategy. You will drive UX strategy, addressing highly complex design decisions with long-term strategic impact on Okta. You will lead, grow, and support members of our exceptional product design team, ensuring our product user experience is valuable, easy to use, and of the highest level of craft and execution.

The Finer Print

You will lead user experience strategy and execution across our Okta India Innovation Center. As a Director of Product Design, your focus will be on leading the development of a secure, trusted, and unified platform with deep integrations, while identifying new design opportunities that span multiple product areas.

In This Role, You Will

• Lead, grow, and motivate a high-performing onsite product design team (individual contributors and managers).
• Create a climate where your team thrives, fostering collaboration and learning.
• Drive the overall UX vision and key objectives for all key products built inside the Okta India Innovation Center, informed by a deep understanding of strategy for that product area.
• Influence Product Area and Function VMTs (Vision, Mission, and Targets) in collaboration with relevant leadership.
• Set a clear, common, motivating purpose or vision with supporting goals for your product area, regularly referencing product and business goals and speaking confidently about how your work relates to the product area vision and company objectives.
• Proactively identify opportunities and needs to raise the level of product design team maturity, working with global design leaders to drive strategic initiatives across the function.
• Own Product Design recruiting for the Okta India Innovation Center, continuously reviewing and evolving the process.
• Improve existing and establish new Product Design processes, contributing to Okta Design quality standards and ensuring standards are met throughout your team.
• Identify and aid in the creation of necessary initiatives, looking ahead and anticipating future challenges, finding and influencing the right people to lead and participate in those initiatives.
• Escalate project timeline and coordination issues and act as the primary negotiator for your region.
• Evangelize and socialize the prioritization of Product Design excellence in Okta's customer and user experience, promoting a culture of innovation that brings together a growing portfolio of Okta products and features.
• Evangelize design thinking across the region, identifying and organizing opportunities for yourself and the Product Design team to spread design thinking and enthusiasm throughout Okta.
• Serve as a Design point of contact for all site related matters at the Okta India Innovation Center.

• You have the heart of a teacher and can help coach and train people. You build and share empathy with people in order to deeply understand them and their needs.
• You see design as a partner in shaping strategic and operational product and UX outcomes; comfortable directing all stages of design for multiple teams within a given product area.
• You are passionate about supporting teams with a wide variety of experience, backgrounds, and interests.
• You have a clear philosophy about how to successfully manage remote design teams.
• You have experience driving organizational change with cross-functional stakeholders.
• You have a collaborative team spirit with great communication skills.

• You demonstrate an awareness of your own style, leadership approach, behavior patterns, strengths, and weaknesses.

Qualifications

• Relevant work experience as a UX design leader, preferably for companies that serve North American customers.
• Overall 15+ Years and 8+ years of management experience, including managing managers.
• Proficient in Figma, Sketch, Adobe Creative Suite, and/or similar design tools.
• Possesses at least a basic understanding of HTML/CSS/JavaScript.
• Your portfolio will show that you've worked on highly complex and/or technical projects across all aspects of the design process (conceptual design, interaction design, information architecture, and visual design). As well, your portfolio will showcase your values and philosophies with regards to design management, leadership, and UX strategy at a Director level.
• Proven experience in both 0-1 product development and with improving and developing an existing product.
• Demonstrated effectiveness in working across organizational boundaries to influence and deliver results.
