Job Title: Head - Jewellery Design
Position Overview
The Head of Design will be responsible for establishing and leading the design function for the jewellery house. This role involves creating a strong design identity for the brand, setting up the design team, and driving the end-to-end design process from trend research and concept creation to final product approval. The individual will work closely with external manufacturers and vendors to ensure designs are translated into high-quality finished jewellery that aligns with brand vision and customer demand.
Key Responsibilities
1. Establishing the Design Function
- Build and structure the design department, including recruitment and training of designers, CAD specialists, and support staff.
- Define design processes, standards, and systems for consistency and efficiency.
- Develop an archive/database of designs for future reference and brand continuity.
2. Creative Vision & Strategy
- Set the creative direction for seasonal and annual collections.
- Translate brand ethos and customer preferences into innovative, market-ready jewellery designs.
- Create design briefs, mood boards, and seasonal themes for collections.
3. Trend & Market Research
- Monitor global and local jewellery trends, fashion influences, and customer insights.
- Benchmark competitor designs and pricing strategies.
- Anticipate shifts in consumer demand and adapt the brand's design strategy accordingly.
4. Coordination with Manufacturers
- Collaborate with external manufacturing partners to ensure feasibility, cost-effectiveness, and timely execution of designs.
- Provide detailed specifications, CAD files, and design clarifications to manufacturers.
- Review samples and prototypes, ensuring adherence to design quality and brand standards.
- Resolve technical design challenges in consultation with manufacturers.
5. New Product Development
- Approve final concepts for prototyping and production.
- Ensure a balanced product mix of traditional, contemporary, and fast-moving designs.
- Oversee quality standards for design execution before commercial launch.
6. Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work with Merchandising & Sales to align designs with consumer preferences and sales targets.
- Partner with Marketing for product launches, look-books, and brand campaigns.
- Liaise with sourcing teams for gemstones, precious metals, and innovative materials.
7. Leadership & Decision-Making
- Act as the final authority for approving collections and design directions.
- Mentor and inspire the design team to push creative boundaries while staying commercially viable.
- Present design concepts and strategies to top management for approval.
Key Skills & Competencies
- Strong creative vision with proven jewellery design expertise.
- Ability to set up and scale a design team from scratch.
- Excellent knowledge of CAD, gemstones, and jewellery finishing techniques.
- Strong vendor management and external collaboration skills.
- Balance of creativity and commercial acumen.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and decision-making skills.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's/Master's degree in Jewellery Design, Fine Arts, or related field.
- 10+ years of experience in jewellery design, with leadership exposure.
- Prior experience in setting up or leading a design team is highly desirable.
- Strong portfolio demonstrating design expertise and creative direction.
