LET’S EXPLORE THE JOB As our Biodiversity Project Officer, you will play a key role in improving and protecting local ecosystems through planning, mapping, data collection, and delivering biodiversity and natural resource management projects. You will work closely with internal teams, government agencies, consultants, and the community to support evidence-based environmental outcomes for our city. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with strong technical skills in ecology or environmental science who enjoys both field and office-based work and is passionate about making a meaningful impact. Key focus areas of the role include: Assisting in prioritising and delivering strategies to enhance ecosystems across Lake Macquarie. Planning, implementing, and evaluating environmental programs relating to aquatic and/or terrestrial biodiversity. Undertaking research and preparing reports, funding applications, plans, and strategies. Providing input into Council’s planning frameworks to support natural resource management principles. Collecting, analysing, and interpreting natural resource and biodiversity data, including GIS mapping. Supporting continuous improvement of environmental management strategies and biodiversity data systems. Keeping up to date with current trends and best practice in spatial representation of biodiversity, data collection, analysis and management. LET’S HEAR ABOUT YOU You are a motivated and collaborative environmental professional who enjoys working across a diverse range of projects that contribute to long-term ecological outcomes. You bring a strong understanding of ecologically sustainable development principles and the impacts of climate change, and you’re confident in applying these to practical biodiversity and natural resource management work. You are comfortable working with ecological data, GIS, and scientific reporting, and you thrive in a role that balances fieldwork, research, and stakeholder engagement. Your communication and report-writing skills are well developed, allowing you to translate complex environmental information into clear, meaningful insights for a range of audiences. Experience in specialist areas such as coastal or aquatic management, ecological assessment or monitoring, bush regeneration, biodiversity surveying, GIS, or database management is highly regarded, as is any experience working within local government. You will bring: Degree qualifications in environmental science, marine science, ecology, natural resource management or similar. Experience in aquatic and/or terrestrial natural resource and biodiversity data analysis and management. Demonstrated experience using GIS and relevant software. Proven ability to work independently, manage priorities and work as an integral part of a team. Class C driver’s licence.
