Job Summary: The Computer Operator is responsible for monitoring and controlling computer systems, ensuring they run efficiently and effectively. This role involves managing hardware and software operations, troubleshooting issues, maintaining system performance, and supporting users with technical problems.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. System Monitoring:

    • Monitor computer systems, servers, and networks for performance issues.
    • Use monitoring tools and software to track system performance and identify potential problems.
    • Ensure systems are running smoothly and efficiently at all times.

  2. Operations Management:

    • Execute daily operational tasks such as system backups, batch processing, and data transfers.
    • Maintain and manage scheduled tasks and automated processes.
    • Ensure completion of all scheduled jobs and resolve any errors that occur.

  3. Troubleshooting and Support:

    • Identify and troubleshoot hardware and software issues.
    • Provide first-level support to users experiencing technical difficulties.
    • Escalate complex problems to higher-level IT staff when necessary.

  4. System Maintenance:

    • Perform routine maintenance on computer systems and peripheral devices.
    • Install, configure, and update software and hardware components.
    • Ensure security patches and updates are applied regularly.

  5. Documentation:

    • Maintain accurate records of system performance, incidents, and resolutions.
    • Create and update operational procedures and documentation.
    • Document any changes made to systems and configurations.

  6. Security and Compliance:

    • Follow security protocols to protect data and systems.
    • Ensure compliance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements.
    • Monitor and respond to security alerts and vulnerabilities.

  7. Collaboration:

    • Work with IT staff and other departments to support technology needs.
    • Assist in the implementation of new systems and technologies.
    • Participate in projects to improve system performance and efficiency.

Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent; an associate's degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience: Previous experience as a computer operator or in a similar role is advantageous.
  • Technical Skills: Knowledge of operating systems (Windows, Linux, Unix), networking, and common software applications. Familiarity with monitoring tools and system management software.
  • Soft Skills: Strong problem-solving abilities, excellent communication skills, and attention to detail. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Certifications: Relevant certifications (e.g., CompTIA A+, Microsoft Certified Professional) are a plus.

Working Conditions:

  • The role typically involves working in an office or data center environment.
  • May require shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays, to provide 24/7 system support.
  • Some positions may involve physical tasks such as lifting and moving computer equipment.

Reports To: IT Manager or Data Center Manager

Salary: Commensurate with experience and qualifications.
