As Head of Legal, India, the primary focus of this role will be to serve as employment counsel for Ameriprise India. Additional responsibilities will include providing administrative oversight of members of the legal and compliance teams of the General Counsel’s Organization (GCO) of Ameriprise Financial, Inc. who are located in India. In addition, the role will periodically partner with appropriate subject matter experts within the GCO to provide legal advice on day-to-day Ameriprise India operations as needed. This role will partner with leaders across the GCO to ensure that Ameriprise India complies with all relevant laws, regulations, industry standards and corporate governance requirements. This role will be part of a matrixed global legal team, reporting to Employment Counsel in the U.S. and to the General Manager Ameriprise India.

​Key Responsibilities:

Employment Law:Serve as employment counsel for operations in India, providing practical, compliant, strategic legal advice and counsel on a full range of employment law issues common to large U.S. public companies with global operations.Proactively identify employment law risks and partner with appropriate stakeholders to develop strategies to mitigate such risksSupport and advise Employee Relations on employee complaint/hotline investigation matters and other workplace investigationsAdvise on compliance with the PoSH Act and various other applicable employment lawsProvide training to leaders throughout Ameriprise India on employment law complianceMonitor and communicate changes in employment laws relating to the Ameriprise India operations, partnering with Human Resources to drive changes to operations as appropriateStrategically and cost-effectively manage employment litigation or other adversarial proceedings in India, including leading and managing relationships with external counsel. Administrative Leadership/Oversight:Provide administrative leadership support to the GCO legal and compliance functions at Ameriprise India, partnering with functional leaders to ensure an engaged team of ~100 professionalsPartner with GCO leaders to evolve long term global resourcing strategy for these functionsOversee SLA management, through direct reports, for efficient and effective operations, in line with the key goals of the GCO organization.Build a strong culture of compliance, aligned with company policies and procedures. Other:Provide general legal support and solutions-focused legal advice on a variety of matters specific to the Ameriprise India business.Monitor and ensure in partnership with subject matter experts in the GCO that the organization's India operations comply with all relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards.Assist with other legal matters as requested.

Required Qualifications:

LLB or LLM degree from a reputable institution with excellent academic credentials 15+ years of experience providing employment law advice, with experience in advising multinational corporations Experience in working in a matrixed environment, overseeing teams with dual reporting relationships Ability to build internal relationships and operate effectively with large multi-stakeholder cross-functional partners at all levels in a fast-paced environment. Outstanding client-service focus and technical mastery to convey complex legal principles clearly and concisely in order to develop solutions and facilitate decision making Strong problem-solving skills  Ability to work independently and efficiently Ability to manage confidential, sensitive information Resilient, results-oriented, and collaborative  Unquestioned integrity and professionalism Good oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience as an in-house counsel for a Fortune 500 company Experience advising financial services organizations
