Responsible to protect staff, patients, and visitors by controlling access, patrolling premises, responding to emergencies, and monitoring surveillance systems

Key roles and responsibilities

  • Access control: Monitoring and restricting access to the hospital and sensitive areas to authorized personnel and visitors only.
  • Patrolling and surveillance: Conducting regular patrols of the hospital grounds and buildings, monitoring CCTV and alarm systems, and watching for signs of theft, vandalism, or other threats.
  • Emergency response: Responding to emergencies, including fire alarms, internal and external disasters, and medical emergencies. They may also be the first point of contact for other code responses.
  • Incident management: Investigating security incidents, de-escalating conflicts, and writing detailed reports on their findings.
  • Conflict resolution: Mediating disputes between staff, patients, and visitors, and managing agitated or aggressive individuals using verbal de-escalation techniques.
  • Safety and security: Protecting hospital property, such as medical equipment and medications, and ensuring a safe environment for everyone on the premises.
  • Visitor management: Screening visitors, verifying their reasons for entry, and providing escorts when necessary.
  • Policy enforcement: Enforcing all hospital rules and security policies to maintain order and a secure environment.
  • Assistance and support: Providing assistance to staff, such as escorting them to their vehicles, and sometimes assisting with high-risk patient transfers or morgue procedures.
  • Crowd control: Managing crowds during busy periods or special events to prevent overcrowding and ensure smooth operations.
