- Vehicle Operation & Maintenance: Safely operate heavy vehicles, conduct routine inspections to identify mechanical issues or safety defects, perform minor maintenance, and keep the vehicle clean.
- Cargo Management: Load, secure, and unload goods appropriately, ensuring they remain stable during transit.
- Route Planning: Plan efficient and safe routes using maps or GPS systems.
- Regulatory Compliance: Adhere to federal and state trucking rules and regulations, including mandatory rest periods, weight limits, and hours of service.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate and detailed logbooks of hours worked, mileage, and fuel expenses.
- Communication: Stay in contact with dispatchers to report status updates, incidents, or delays on the road.
- Safety: Follow all traffic laws and safety regulations, including specific procedures for transporting hazardous materials if applicable.
- Time Management: Meet delivery schedules and deadlines by managing time effectively on the road.
Required Skills
- Driving & Navigation: Proficiency in operating heavy machinery and using navigation tools like GPS.
- Physical & Mental Stamina: The ability to drive long hours, sit for extended periods, and handle the physical demands of the job.
- Mechanical Aptitude: A basic understanding of how the vehicle works and the ability to identify mechanical problems.
- Communication Skills: Professional and courteous interaction with dispatchers and customers.
- Adaptability: The capacity to handle unexpected situations such as traffic, weather, or mechanical issues.
Requirements
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL): The mandatory license to operate commercial vehicles.
- Vision & Hearing: Legally required strong eyesight and hearing.
- Physical Health: Must be in good physical health to meet the demands of the job.
- Clean Driving Record: No recent moving or driving violations.
- Background Checks: Willingness to undergo background checks and drug tests.
