Education:

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Fire & Safety Engineering from a recognized university.

Add. Qualifications:

Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, or a related field is preferred.

Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is a plus.

LEED AP or other relevant sustainability certifications focusing on water efficiency.

Certified Data Centre Professional (CDCP), CDCS, or Accredited Tier Specialist (ATS) from Uptime Institute.

National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) certifications (e.g., NFPA 13, NFPA 75, NFPA 72, NFPA 2001) are highly desirable.

Experience in working with CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks), hydraulic calculation software for fire sprinkler and plumbing systems, and BIM tools and familiarity with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for smoke modeling is an advantage.

Overall Experience:

8-12 years of progressive experience in mechanical design and engineering, specifically focused on Fire Fighting (FF) and Plumbing (P) systems for large-scale industrial, commercial, or infrastructure projects.

Minimum 3-5 years in a senior design lead, principal engineer, or management role, demonstrating strong technical leadership, design oversight, and problem-solving capabilities in complex FFP systems.

Proven track record of successfully delivering detailed FFP designs from conceptualization through to construction support.

DC Specific Exp:

Direct, hands-on experience in designing and engineering advanced fire suppression systems, fire detection and alarm systems, and critical plumbing infrastructure for large-scale data centers or data center campuses.

Proven experience in developing FFP designs that meet stringent data center safety and operational requirements such as NFPA 75 (for IT equipment protection), Uptime Institute Tier standards, and high water efficiency targets.

Experience in customer-facing design discussions, including translating complex customer safety protocols, water management preferences, and operational requirements into detailed and code-compliant FFP design solutions, and effectively presenting these to clients.

Demonstrated experience in evaluating new FFP technologies, sustainable water management solutions, and innovative fire safety strategies that enhance data center reliability, safety, and environmental performance.

Role Purpose:

The CEI - Mechanical (FF&P) is a pivotal technical leader within the Design & Engineering department, specifically focusing on Fire Fighting and Plumbing systems. This role is responsible for leading the development of highly reliable, code-compliant, and sustainable Fire Fighting and Plumbing infrastructure designs for all data center projects. You will drive innovation in FFP systems to enhance safety, optimize water efficiency, and meet evolving customer needs and industry best practices. As a key technical expert, you will provide customer-facing FFP engineering solutions and support, overseeing the entire FFP design lifecycle from conceptualization to construction support, while fostering a culture of technical excellence and innovation within the mechanical design team.

Key Responsibilities:

Fire Fighting System Design & Engineering Leadership.

System Design: Lead the end-to-end design and engineering of all fire fighting systems for data centers, including fire detection & alarm systems (FDAS), various fire suppression systems (e.g., pre-action, clean agent, inert gas, water mist, specialized systems for electrical/IT rooms), and smoke control/exhaust systems.

Code Compliance: Ensure all fire fighting designs strictly comply with NFPA standards (e.g., NFPA 75 for IT equipment protection, NFPA 13 for sprinkler systems, NFPA 72 for fire alarms, NFPA 2001 for clean agents), NBC, relevant IS standards, and local fire authority regulations.

Strategy Development: Develop comprehensive fire safety strategies, protection concepts, and performance specifications tailored for critical IT environments and data center infrastructure.

Plumbing System Design & Engineering Leadership:

System Design: Lead the design and engineering of all plumbing systems, including domestic water supply and distribution networks, sanitary drainage, storm water management systems, hot water systems, and specialized water systems (e.g., Reverse Osmosis (RO)/Demineralized (DM) water plants, water softening, chilled water piping, greywater recycling).

Efficiency & Sustainability: Ensure plumbing designs comply with relevant national and international plumbing codes and promote advanced water efficiency strategies, sustainable practices, and minimal environmental impact.

Reliability: Design for robust, redundant, and highly reliable water supply and drainage systems critical for data center operations and cooling infrastructure.

Customer Engineering & Solutions Development:

Requirements Translation: Engage directly with key customers and the Sales/Solutions team to thoroughly understand their specific safety protocols, water management preferences, operational requirements, and sustainability goals related to FFP systems.

Solutioning: Translate complex customer needs into practical, code-compliant, scalable, and optimized FFP design solutions that align with their operational models and business objectives.

Technical Presentation: Confidently present and articulate FFP design concepts, safety features, redundancy options, water efficiency strategies, and value propositions to customers, addressing their technical queries and concerns in detail.

Pre-Sales Support: Collaborate with the Sales and Solutions teams to develop compelling technical proposals, conceptual designs, and feasibility studies for prospective customer engagements with FFP scope.

Innovation, Research & Technology Evaluation:

Innovation Drive: Lead research, evaluation, and adoption of new and emerging FFP technologies, sustainable water management practices, advanced fire detection/suppression methods, and environmental control solutions for data centers.

Design Optimization: Drive innovation in FFP design methodologies to continuously enhance safety, reduce environmental impact, improve water utilization efficiency, and optimize life cycle costs.

Standards Development: Develop and update internal design standards, specifications, and best practices for innovative FFP components and integrated systems.

System Analysis & Optimization:

Calculations & Modeling: Perform and review detailed hydraulic calculations for fire suppression systems, domestic water supply, and drainage networks. Utilize advanced modeling tools (e.g., CFD for smoke) where applicable.

Optimization: Optimize FFP system designs for reliability, maintainability, cost-effectiveness, and operational efficiency while ensuring unwavering adherence to safety and compliance standards.

Risk Assessment: Conduct fire and life safety risk assessments, and develop corresponding mitigation strategies to inform design decisions and enhance overall data center resilience.

Quality Assurance & Technical Governance:

Design QA/QC: Implement rigorous Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) processes for all FFP design deliverables, ensuring accuracy, completeness, adherence to design principles, and constructability.

Mentorship & Development: Provide expert technical guidance, mentorship, and training to junior and mid-level mechanical engineers specializing in FFP design, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement.

Review & Support: Conduct technical reviews of vendor submissions (e.g., shop drawings, submittals, test reports) and provide critical design support to the Delivery/Construction teams during project execution and commissioning, including Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT).

Required Skills & Competencies:

Fire Fighting Design Expertise:

o Deep Knowledge: In-depth technical knowledge of various fire detection technologies, fire alarm

control panels, and fire suppression systems (e.g., pre-action, inert gas, clean agent, water mist,

wet/dry pipe sprinklers) specifically for data center white spaces and supporting infrastructure.

o NFPA & Indian Codes: Comprehensive understanding and practical application of NFPA

standards (e.g., NFPA 75, 13, 72, 2001, 20) and Indian fire codes (NBC, IS) for data center

design.

o Hydraulic Calculations: Proficiency in performing and reviewing hydraulic calculations for fire suppression systems.

Plumbing Design Expertise:

o Comprehensive Knowledge: In-depth technical knowledge of domestic water supply, drainage,

sanitary systems, storm water management, hot water systems, and specialized water systems

for cooling towers (RO/DM water, water treatment principles).

o Piping & Pumping: Strong understanding of piping materials, pressure classes, pump selection,

and hydraulic principles related to complex plumbing networks.

o Sustainability: Knowledge of water conservation techniques, greywater recycling, and

sustainable plumbing practices.

Data Center FFP Design Specifics:

o Critical Environment: Understanding of the unique challenges and requirements of fire safety and

plumbing in mission-critical data center environments, including protection of sensitive IT

equipment, non-conductive agents, and precise water quality for cooling systems.

o Integration: Strong awareness of how FFP systems integrate seamlessly with other MEP

disciplines (HVAC, Electrical), Civil/Structural elements, and Building Management Systems

(BMS).

Customer Engineering & Communication:

o Requirements Elicitation: Highly skilled in eliciting, interpreting, and translating complex

customer safety and operational requirements into design parameters.

o Technical Communication: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills to articulate

complex technical concepts, conduct persuasive presentations, and engage effectively with

customer technical and management teams.

o Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to develop innovative and practical solutions to unique customer FFP challenges.

Technical Governance & Mentorship:

o Design QA/QC: Strong commitment to implementing and enforcing rigorous quality assurance processes for FFP designs.
