SAP Tax Engine Specialist / Consultant Job Description

Position Title: Position: SAP S/4 HANA Senior Solutions Architect – Order to Cash & Tax

Location: Kolkata

Role Overview:

The SAP Tax Engine Specialist is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the tax determination and calculation functionality within the SAP environment. The role focuses on ensuring tax compliance, accuracy, and efficiency across global business transactions by leveraging SAP's native tax functionalities or third-party tax engines such as Vertex, Thomson Reuters ONESOURCE, or Avalara.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead end-to-end solution design and delivery for the Order to Cash process with a strong focus on integration with Finance, Accounting, and Taxation.
  • Collaborate effectively with global counterparts, particularly in the US and Philippines, to understand business needs and deliver optimal solutions.
  • Implementation & Configuration
  • Configure and support SAP tax functionality in modules like FI (Financial Accounting), SD (Sales & Distribution), and MM (Materials Management).
  • Integrate SAP with third-party tax engines (e.g. ONESOURCE) for indirect tax determination.
  • Set up tax codes, tax procedures, condition records, and jurisdiction codes.
  • Support S/4HANA tax engine migration or upgrades.
  • Tax Compliance & Optimization
  • Ensure compliance with global indirect tax (VAT, GST, Sales & Use Tax, etc.) regulations.
  • Coordinate with Tax and Finance teams to understand business requirements and translate them into SAP configurations.
  • Work with legal, accounting, and compliance stakeholders to validate tax rules.
  • Liaise with SAP BASIS and ABAP teams for system updates, transports, and enhancements.
  • Testing & Documentation
  • Develop and execute test scripts for tax scenarios during system upgrades or rollouts.
  • Document tax configurations, procedures, and technical specifications.
  • Provide user training and knowledge transfer sessions.
  • Continuous Improvement
  • Monitor system performance and recommend automation or optimization opportunities.
  • Stay updated with new SAP releases and tax compliance changes.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Finance, Accounting, Information Systems, or related field.
  • Minimum 10+ years of hands-on experience in SAP tax configuration and indirect tax management.
  • Strong understanding of:
  • SAP FI, SD, MM modules.
  • Tax procedure configuration (TAXINN, TAXINJ, etc.)
  • Global tax compliance frameworks.
  • Experience with ONESOURCE integration preferred.
  • Working knowledge of S/4HANA environment is a plus.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work in cross-functional and international teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • SAP Certification in Finance or Tax modules.
  • Experience in multi-country or multi-currency tax environments.
  • Knowledge of digital tax compliance (e-invoicing, GST e-way bills, SAF-T, etc.).
  • Experience with ABAP debugging for tax determination issues.
