About the role
This leadership role sits within the Workplace Technology Collaboration team, part of the Tesco Workplace Technology engineering function. You will be responsible for leading a team of highly skilled engineers, overseeing the strategy, delivery, and lifecycle of Tesco's global collaboration and colleague productivity technology platforms — including M365, Entra, Power Platform, SharePoint, Teams, InTune, Copilot, Exchange / SMTP. As an Engineering Manager, you will balance hands-on technical leadership with team development, delivery governance, and stakeholder engagement to ensure collaboration technology and services remain secure, resilient, and fit for a modern digital workplace.

Key Responsibilities
Leadership & People Management
- Lead, develop, and coach a team of Collaboration Engineers, supporting their growth, technical delivery, and wellbeing.
- Set clear objectives, priorities, and direction for the team aligned to the Workplace Technology Collaboration technology strategy.
- Foster a culture of engineering excellence, inclusion, and continuous improvement.
- Support hiring, onboarding, and career progression across the collaboration technology domain.
Technology Strategy & Roadmap
- Own and define the strategic direction and roadmap for Collaboration technologies including M365, Copilot, Colleague Data Technologies, Productivity technologies.
- Align Collaboration technology strategy to broader business objectives and Workplace Technology's product vision.
- Track industry trends and innovations in collaboration and productivity, influencing adoption where appropriate.
Delivery Oversight
- Oversee engineering delivery across the collaboration lifecycle — from initiation and design through to deployment and service transition.
- Ensure work is delivered to agreed scope, timelines, and quality, with clear accountability and progress tracking.
- Partner with product managers and architects to shape new initiatives and lead prioritisation based on value, risk, and feasibility.
- Maintain oversight of project budgets, cost forecasts, resource planning, and vendor engagement for team related projects.
Technical Excellence
- Provide technical direction and governance across collaboration and productivity platforms and services, ensuring alignment to architectural standards and security best practices.
- Review designs, promote automation and Infrastructure as Code (IaC), and champion resilience and observability.
- Serve as a senior escalation point for complex technical challenges where necessary.
Security, Risk & Operational Governance
- Ensure collaboration technologies are secure by design and compliant with internal controls, regulatory standards, and audit requirements.
- Oversee DR, backup, and recovery strategies for critical services; contribute to and validate BCPs.
- Drive adoption of Zero Trust principles, tiered administration, conditional access, MFA, and modern authentication approaches.
Stakeholder & Cross-Team Engagement
- Collaborate with Workplace Technology leadership, Security, Infrastructure, and Product teams to ensure cohesive delivery and strategic alignment.
- Represent Workplace Engineering in key forums and cross-functional initiatives.
- Support senior leadership reporting, business case development, and technology planning cycles.
You will need
- Proven experience managing engineering teams within Workplace Technology or infrastructure domains in large, complex environments. Experience driving roadmaps, technical strategy, or architecture boards.
- Strong technical background in:
- M365 / Entra
- Copilot / Gen AI
- MicrosoftTeams
- Power Platform
- Email/Exchange/SMTP
- SharePoint/File/Data Technologies
- InTune
- Wider Microsoft Technologies such as Viva, Loop.
- Windows Server / Hypervisor
- Track record of delivering secure, scalable solutions with embedded resilience and automation.
- Familiarity with IaC, CI/CD integration, PowerShell, and monitoring tools.
- Strong financial acumen with experience managing engineering budgets and vendor costs.
- Excellent communication and influencing skills across technical and senior business stakeholders.
