Key duties and responsibilities

  • Program development: Create and refine CNC programs to control machinery, translating 2D and 3D designs from blueprints and CAD models into machine instructions.
  • Analysis and planning: Analyze technical drawings to determine dimensions, choose appropriate cutting tools, and calculate machine speeds and feed rates.
  • Machine setup and operation: Write and adjust programs, which may involve manual adjustments and configuring machine settings to achieve desired specifications.
  • Troubleshooting: Monitor the manufacturing process, troubleshoot issues, and modify programs to correct problems.
  • Maintenance: Maintain a database of tooling and ensure programs are compatible with different machines.

Required skills and qualifications

  • Technical skills: Proficiency in CAD/CAM software and a solid understanding of CNC programming languages, tooling, and the properties of various materials.
  • Analytical skills: The ability to interpret complex technical blueprints and engineering drawings accurately.
  • Problem-solving: Strong problem-solving skills to identify and resolve issues that arise during the manufacturing process.
  • Education: A certificate or degree in CNC programming, machining, computer science, or a related field is often required.
  • Experience: Experience with both the office/programming side and the manufacturing/machining floor is beneficial, as programmers often split their time between the two.
