The Accessibility & EPUB Conversion Specialist is responsible for converting source content into fully compliant, accessible digital publications. The role demands deep expertise in EPUB2/EPUB3, WCAG 2.2, EPUB Accessibility 1.1, and European Accessibility Act (EAA 2025) standards, ensuring that all digital outputs are optimized for assistive technologies and inclusive reading experiences.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Convert manuscripts, PDFs, or XML files into EPUB2/EPUB3, fixed-layout, or reflowable formats using industry-standard tools and scripts.
  • Implement and validate accessibility features including semantic tagging, alt-text integration, ARIA roles, and correct reading order.
  • Conduct EPUB validation using ACE by DAISY, EPUBCheck, and W3C accessibility tools, ensuring zero errors before delivery.
  • Review and remediate client-supplied EPUBs to meet WCAG 2.2 / EPUB A11y 1.1 requirements.
  • Collaborate with content, QA, and metadata teams to ensure accurate structure, navigation, and metadata embedding (ONIX, BISAC, etc.).
  • Generate HTML5, MOBI, or XML-based accessible formats as per client deliverables.
  • Document accessibility workflows, maintain checklists, and support continuous process improvement.
  • Provide training and guidance on accessibility best practices to internal and vendor teams.

Required Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong knowledge of EPUB standards (2.0, 3.0, 3.2) and accessibility frameworks (WCAG 2.1/2.2, EPUB A11y 1.1).
  • Proficiency with ACE by DAISY, EPUBCheck, Sigil, Calibre, and NVDA/JAWS/VoiceOver screen-reader testing.
  • Familiarity with semantic HTML5, ARIA roles, CSS3, and JavaScript for interactive eBooks.
  • Experience with Alt-text writing, image description authoring, and complex content structuring (tables, math, charts).
  • Exposure to XML-First workflows and metadata management (ONIX, JSON, Excel mapping).
  • Working knowledge of Adobe InDesign export for EPUB, VBA or Python scripting, and QA automation tools is advantageous.
  • Strong analytical skills and commitment to detail, accuracy, and accessibility compliance.

Educational Qualification:

  • Diploma / Bachelor's degree in Publishing, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
  • Accessibility certification (e.g., IAAP CPACC / WAS / ADS) preferred but not mandatory.

Experience:

  • 3–7 years of hands-on experience in EPUB conversion, accessibility remediation, or digital publishing production.
  • Prior experience in STM, educational, or trade publishing will be an added advantage.
