Role & responsibilities

A GET is a fresher or recent engineering graduate (usually in Civil, Chemical, Environmental, or Mechanical Engineering) undergoing training to become a full-time engineer in operations, maintenance, or design roles within water/wastewater treatment plants.

  1. Plant Operations Assistance:

  2. Monitor and understand the working of various plant units (e.g., sedimentation, aeration tanks, clarifiers, filters, disinfection units, etc.).

  3. Support in daily plant operations under the supervision of shift in-charge or plant manager.

  4. Learn and assist in controlling flow rates, dosing systems (chemical dosing), and pump operations.

  5. Maintenance Support:

  6. Assist maintenance teams in preventive and corrective maintenance of pumps, blowers, valves, motors, and other mechanical/electrical components.

  7. Maintain logbooks and report any anomalies or breakdowns to senior staff.

  8. Process Monitoring and Control:

  9. Regularly monitor water/effluent parameters like pH, BOD, COD, TSS, DO, etc.

  10. Understand SCADA/PLC systems if the plant is automated.

  11. Data Collection & Reporting:

  12. Record operational parameters and create daily/weekly reports.

  13. Prepare performance reports and suggest improvements or deviations.

  14. Chemical Handling and Inventory:

  15. Learn safe handling and usage of treatment chemicals like alum, chlorine, PAC, lime, polymers, etc.

  16. Maintain chemical stock records.

Learning & Development Responsibilities:

  1. Training & Documentation:

  2. Undergo formal and on-the-job training regarding plant design, treatment technologies, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).

  3. Study technical manuals, P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams), and process flow diagrams.

  4. Standard Compliance Understanding:

  5. Learn about pollution control norms (e.g., from CPCB, SPCBs, NGT) and ensure plant operation adheres to those standards.

  6. Understand ISO standards or EHS (Environmental Health and Safety) protocols applicable to the plant.

Coordination & Communication Responsibilities:

  1. Team Coordination:

  2. Coordinate with shift operators, lab technicians, and maintenance teams for smooth operation.

  3. Support plant supervisors or engineers in project or shutdown activities.

  4. Vendor Interaction (if applicable):

  5. Learn to interact with vendors during AMC services or during installation of new equipment.

  6. Client or Regulatory Communication (rare for GETs but part of growth):

  7. Assist in preparing compliance reports for local authorities or clients under guidance.
