Encyclopdia Britannica is looking for a dynamic, knowledgeable, digital-first writer and editor
who will be responsible for Britannicas coverage of topics across assigned discipline clusters.
Britannica is singularly proud of its 254-year history as a publisher and disseminator of
knowledge for students as well as lifelong learners. Our mission now is to reach learners where
they live online and to engage with them in the multitude of ways people learn, including through
visually driven storytelling.
Demonstrable editorial and writing skills as well as subject matter expertise are essential for this
role. Expertise in geography, history, chemistry, or sports (with special focus on cricket and
football) is preferred but is not a requirement. The ideal candidate will have a master's degree
and will have the curiosity and enthusiasm to reach beyond their area of expertise, create
content about topics that may not be immediately familiar, and be energized by sharing what
they know and what they've learned with Britannica's audience.
Being an editor at Britannica means working in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment
that values the trustworthiness of its content more than anything else, and the successful
candidate will thrive in this setting. The successful candidate will also be committed to producing
content that is clear, fair, accurate, and relevant.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Editing, writing, and commissioning articles.
- Planning, in partnership with colleagues, contributors, and advisers, how Britannica can
expand and maintain its coverage of topics in the assigned disciplines.
- Working with colleagues and managers to identify articles that need revision and
updating such articles so that they are current, engaging to today's learners, and
complete.
- Collaborating with media editors and illustrators on the acquisition and production of
images, videos, and other media.
- Working with other editors during the revision and fact-checking process.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- The applicant should have significant writing and editing experience. Please include
links to at least three appropriate writing samples with your application.
- The applicant should have a master's degree; a bachelor's degree with professional
experience and broad contacts will be considered a substitute.
- The ideal applicant will have up to 6 years' work experience relevant to the role.
