Job Description: Research Consultant (6-Month Contract)

Role Overview

The Advanced Study Institute of Asia (ASIA) invites applications for the position of Research Consultant for its India Archives Initiative.

The project aims to build a centralised archive of India by collecting and organising material related to maps, demography, politics, history, socioeconomic trends, religious movements, and linguistic data. The goal is to bring scattered sources into a coherent repository that supports future research, teaching, and public knowledge.

The Research Consultant will be responsible for identifying relevant material from libraries, archives, museums, and private or institutional collections; documenting and cataloguing these sources through organized notes, metadata, and digital records; and helping create a structured system for storing, indexing, and retrieving the collected material. This role involves both field-based visits and digital research, ensuring that diverse historical sources are verified, preserved, and integrated into a unified archival framework. In doing so, he/she will directly shape the foundation of a long-term national resource that supports future scholarship and public understanding.

Key Responsibilities

  • Visit libraries, archives, museums, and other repositories to source primary and secondary material.
  • Identify, collect, and document relevant data, manuscripts, records, maps, and publications.
  • Maintain organised research notes, references, and bibliographic material.
  • Assist in building a structured database of collected sources.
  • Prepare brief reports, summaries, and research updates.
  • Coordinate with project leads and share weekly progress.
  • Handle digital tools for scanning, cataloguing, data storage, and documentation.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in social sciences; history preferred.
  • Strong research aptitude and familiarity with academic methods.
  • Comfortable working with archival material and physical repositories.
  • Proficiency in both Hindi and English (reading, writing, and comprehension).
  • Technologically confident—able to use digital tools, online archives, databases, and documentation software.

Preferred Skills

Experience with field or archival research.

Attention to detail and good record-keeping habits.

Ability to work independently and manage timelines.

Duration

6 months, with the possibility of extension based on performance and project needs.

Compensation

Salary as per institutional norms.

Work Mode

Primarily field- and research-based, with periodic meetings and reporting.
