Key Responsibilities

 Level 3 (L3) Citrix Administrator tasks are highly specialized, focusing on

architecture, strategic design, advanced troubleshooting, performance tuning, and

the integration of the entire Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (CVAD) environment,

formerly known as XenApp and XenDesktop. They act as the Subject Matter Experts

(SMEs), handling complex, systemic issues that Tier 1 and Tier 2 support cannot

resolve.

 Here is a detailed list of Level 3 Citrix Administration tasks, with a strong focus on

XenApp/Virtual Apps (XA/VA) components:

 Architectural Design & Strategy

 L3 admins lead projects to scale, upgrade, and modernize the Citrix farm.

 Farm/Site Architecture Design: Designing the optimal CVAD Site structure, including

multi-site, multi-zone, and resource location deployment for global availability and

disaster recovery.

 NetScaler/ADC Integration Strategy: Designing and managing the advanced

NetScaler/Application Delivery Controller (ADC) topology, including:

 Global Server Load Balancing (GSLB) implementation for disaster recovery and

intelligent traffic distribution.

 Advanced Policy Expression Language (nFactor Authentication) configuration for

complex, layered security and conditional access.

 Designing the Unified Gateway architecture for access to both internal applications

and external resources.

 Cloud Integration (Hybrid/Multi-Cloud): Architecting and implementing the

integration of on-premises CVAD with public clouds (Azure/AWS) using Citrix Cloud

Connector and optimizing the use of Machine Creation Services (MCS) across hybrid

environments.

 Storage Optimization (PVS/MCS): Designing the storage strategy for Provisioning

Services (PVS) vDisk libraries or Machine Creation Services (MCS) storage accounts

to optimize I/O performance (IOPS) and minimize storage costs.

 Advanced Troubleshooting & Performance Tuning

 L3 is the final escalation point for system-wide performance, stability, and protocol

issues.

 Deep-Dive Protocol Analysis: Troubleshooting complex HDX protocol issues (latency,

bandwidth consumption, frame rate), often involving advanced network captures

and analyzing ICA/HDX virtual channel traffic.

 Broker and Delivery Controller Diagnostics: Resolving deep-seated issues within the

Delivery Controller (DDC) components, including database connectivity failures,

service registration problems, and complex load balancing errors.

 Advanced Resource Manager/Director Analysis: Utilizing Citrix Director with

advanced filters and diagnostic tools to perform root cause analysis (RCA) on

persistent user experience complaints or systemic logon duration issues.

 Workspace Environment Management (WEM) Tuning: Performing expert-level

configuration and optimization of WEM settings, including:

 Tuning CPU Spikes Protection and CPU/Memory Optimization rules across resource

groups.

 Troubleshooting WEM agent and infrastructure service communication issues.

 StoreFront/Web Interface Failures: Diagnosing issues with complex StoreFront

aggregation groups, subscription data synchronization, and advanced authentication

service errors.

 Security, Compliance, & Access Control

 Ensuring the entire environment adheres to strict security standards and access

policies.

 Advanced Group Policy Management (Citrix & Windows): Designing and

implementing a clean, performant hierarchy of Citrix Policies and Windows Group

Policies (GPOs) to control user environment settings without creating conflicts or

slow logons.

 Security Hardening: Implementing the latest security best practices on VDA servers

and core components, often based on CIS Benchmarks, and ensuring encryption

protocols are properly enforced.

 Image Security and Integrity: Developing procedures for the secure creation and

maintenance of master images (vDisks/MCS images), ensuring patches and security

baselines are applied consistently across all application servers.

 Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) Integration: Designing and troubleshooting

complex MFA integrations via NetScaler/ADC and integrating with enterprise

identity providers (IdPs) like Azure AD (Entra ID).

 Provisioning Services (PVS) / Master Image Management (XenApp Focus)

 PVS and master image management are critical for XenApp/Virtual Apps stability

and performance.

 PVS Store and Target Device Optimization: Troubleshooting and tuning PVS Write

Cache configuration, ensuring optimal storage performance for the cache location

(e.g., RAM with overflow to disk).

 vDisk Versioning and Promotion: Designing and leading the process for creating,

testing, and promoting new vDisk versions across test, staging, and production

environments with minimal disruption.

 PVS Farm and Stream Service Stability: Diagnosing and resolving complex issues with

the PVS Stream Service stability, load balancing, and connectivity to SQL databases.

 Image Management Strategy (PVS vs. MCS): Determining and justifying the

enterprise-wide choice between PVS and MCS based on organizational

infrastructure, scalability needs, and operational overhead.

 Capacity Planning & Disaster Recovery

 Ensuring the platform can scale and is resilient against major failures.

 Resource Forecasting: Performing detailed capacity planning and resource

forecasting based on historical usage data (collected via Director/WEM) to predict

future hardware needs (CPU, RAM, Licensing).

 Disaster Recovery (DR) Strategy: Designing and regularly testing the failover

procedures between multiple Citrix sites, including Database Mirroring/Always On

for site integrity and failover of NetScaler appliances.

 SQL Database Management: Consulting and overseeing the maintenance and

performance tuning of the SQL backend databases for the DDC and Monitoring
