Assists with cleaning, decontaminating, and sterilizing medical instruments and equipment, ensuring they are safe for use. Key responsibilities include inspecting, assembling, and packaging instruments, operating sterilization equipment like autoclaves, maintaining accurate records, and upholding strict infection control protocols. The internship provides hands-on experience in inventory management and supporting surgical teams with sterile supplies. Core responsibilities

  • Decontamination and cleaning: Receive used surgical instruments and medical devices, decontaminate and clean them using appropriate methods and equipment.
  • Inspection and assembly: Inspect instruments for damage, assemble them into correct sets, and package them for sterilization.
  • Sterilization: Operate and monitor sterilization equipment, such as autoclaves and washer-disinfectors, to ensure proper sterilization cycles.
  • Record keeping: Maintain accurate logs of sterilization processes, equipment maintenance, and inventory.
  • Infection control: Adhere strictly to infection control standards, safety protocols, and departmental policies to prevent contamination.
  • Inventory and distribution: Assist with managing inventory, storing sterile supplies correctly, and preparing and delivering equipment to surgical and other departments.
  • Equipment maintenance: Perform routine checks on sterilization machinery and report any malfunctioning equipment to a supervisor.

Qualifications and skills

  • Must have a strong understanding of sterilization techniques, infection control protocols, and safety procedures.
  • Requires excellent attention to detail and the ability to follow instructions carefully.
  • Must be able to work effectively as part of a team.
  • The ability to lift and move medical equipment is often necessary.
