Roles and Responsibilities of a Quality Line Inspector (Machine Shop)

In-Process and Final Inspection

  • Perform first article, in-process, and final inspections of machined components to ensure they meet engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Verify dimensions, tolerances, and surface finishes using precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, height gauges, bore gauges, and indicators.
  • Inspect threads, fits, and geometrical tolerances per GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) standards.

Quality Verification and Documentation

  • Record and maintain inspection results in inspection reports, check sheets, or digital quality systems.
  • Identify and document nonconforming parts and ensure they are properly tagged, segregated, and reported.
  • Support corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) by providing accurate inspection data and feedback.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Work closely with machine operators & Shift In-charge to communicate inspection findings.
  • Provide feedback to machinists on quality concerns to help prevent recurrence of defects.

Equipment and Calibration

  • Ensure all measuring and inspection tools are calibrated, maintained, and handled properly.
  • Report damaged or malfunctioning inspection equipment to the quality department for repair or replacement.

Visual and Functional Inspections

  • Conduct visual checks for surface finish, burrs, cracks, scratches, or contamination.
  • Verify part marking, labeling, and traceability requirements are met.
  • Perform basic functional checks where applicable (e.g., assembly fit, movement tests).

Continuous Improvement

  • Suggest and support process improvements to reduce defects and increase efficiency.
  • Assist in developing inspection plans, sampling methods, and quality checklists.
  • Participate in training and cross-functional quality improvement teams.

Safety and Housekeeping

  • Adhere to all safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area following 5S principles.
