CRED is a members-only platform that rewards creditworthy individuals for their responsible financial behavior. The Merchant Payments team at CRED builds and operates an (in-principle) RBI-approved Payment Aggregator. With a comprehensive charter that supports payments not only for CRED but also for external merchants through CRED Pay, we are building one of the largest payment aggregators in the country by value processing lakhs of crores in transactions every year. Our focus on prudent risk management, robust technology infrastructure, regulatory compliance, and seamless partner integrations while navigating the scale, complexity, and regulatory rigor of the payments ecosystem positions us to redefine the payment experience for both merchants and users.

Key Impact Areas of the Role
  • Technology Strategy: Define and drive the technology strategy for CRED's merchant payments products and horizontal platform capabilities, positioning the division as scalable.
  • Build vs. Buy Decisions: Make critical technology strategy decisions on build vs. buy for merchant payments infrastructure, balancing speed of execution with long-term scalability and platform thinking.
  • Technology Practices: Establish industry-leading technology practices for building resilient, compliant systems that can handle complex workflows and real-time transaction processing at scale.
  • System Integration: Integrate and harmonize multiple systems across the ecosystem spanning merchant onboarding, checkout, payment processing, and post-payment experiences such as refunds, chargebacks, settlements, and reconciliation to build a comprehensive payments platform.
  • Team Leadership: Build and lead a high-caliber engineering team (10 engineers) steering the team towards building world-class, technology-driven solutions.

Technology Orientation
  • Create a culture that enables technology to catalyze solving complex problems and enhancing the customer experience.
  • Ensure the best engineering practices are adopted for building high-volume transaction processing systems with strong consistency and reliability guarantees.
  • Be hands-on with the technology stack and tools, leading by example in architectural decisions.
  • Work closely with architects to choose the right technology stack & ensure RASP (reliability, availability, scalability & performance) characteristics.
  • Apply a first-principles approach to solving complex technology problems, including workflow orchestration, state management, and integration challenges.

  • Drive results & focus on outcomes that directly impact business metrics and customer satisfaction.
  • Responsible for timeliness and quality of deliverables across pods like merchant onboarding, payment processing, post payments, etc.
  • Communicate effectively and keep internal stakeholders (risk, compliance, business, product) and external partners updated on progress.
  • Anticipate problems in complex workflows and unblock the team proactively.
People Management
  • Mentor & coach the team on both technical excellence and understanding of payments domain complexities.
  • Actively engage with the team and help build their career path.
  • Manage conflicts proactively and provide timely feedback in a fast-paced environment.
  • Motivate, inspire, recognize & reward good performance while maintaining high standards for platform reliability.
You Should Apply If You Possess
  • 8 years of experience (with 1 years of experience being an engineering leader managing teams of 6-8 engineers).
  • Strong competencies in software design & architecture with deep understanding of scalability for high-volume transaction processing systems.
  • Proficiency in Java or Go with experience in building distributed systems and microservices architecture.
  • Experience in agile methodologies and have led cross-functional teams in complex product development.
  • Experience building platforms that integrate with multiple external systems and handle complex workflows.
  • Ability to make decisions independently under ambiguity and navigate technical trade-offs effectively.
  • Ability to lend structure to complex technical problems and break them down into executable roadmaps.
  • Ability to communicate and manage internal and external stakeholders effectively in a regulated environment.
  • Strong understanding of system reliability, fault tolerance, and operational excellence for mission-critical financial systems.
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS) and modern architecture patterns.
