Position Overview: We are looking for a Software Engineer who is passionate about using your Linux, open source software, and DevOps skills to maintain the DigitalOcean droplet images portfolio.

As a Software Engineer at DigitalOcean, you will join a dynamic team dedicated to revolutionizing cloud computing. You will be maintaining the OS images for use on all 4 million+ droplets, building and maintaining mechanisms for creating these images on internal infrastructure using Github actions and other automation tools, and responding to any critical security issues in the OS. You will work closely with Ubuntu, Debian, and RHEL-based upstream distributions to address bugs. This is a key role on our core Compute team within the Infrastructure as a Service (IAAS) organization.

What You'll Do:

• Build and maintain the Linux distro images for use on all 4 million+ droplets
• Work with upstream open source software communities to integrate bug fixes and features
• Collaborate proactively across distributed teams
• Develop and maintain robust automation tooling to ensure consistent, reliable, and scalable image builds
• Build reliable automation and continuously improve tooling quality

Key Metrics:

• General understanding of Linux system use and debugging
• Experience building images for QEMU/KVM, or similar virtualization platforms
• Good understanding of cloud-init - preferred
• Distributed systems experience
• Proficiency with GitHub Actions, CI/CD, Concourse, or similar
• Proficiency in Python, bash, and Golang or similar for automation scripts and tools

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics or Computer/Electrical Engineering or equivalent work experience
• Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems at scale
• Strong security mindset with proactive approach to implementing best practices
• Excellent cross-team collaboration and communication skills
• Professional-level written and spoken English with strong presentation abilities
• Experience with observability platforms such as Prometheus, Grafana, or Elastic
