A Watercraft Engineer (also known as Marine Engineer) is responsible for maintaining, operating, and repairing the propulsion systems and auxiliary equipment on marine vessels. Key duties include:

Performing daily system checks on gasoline and diesel engines, propulsion machinery, electrical and mechanical systems aboard watercraft

Troubleshooting and repairing engine components, fuel systems, electrical wiring, cooling, and lubrication systems

Supervising maintenance teams and providing training on marine engine upkeep and safety practices
-
Monitoring vessel fuel consumption, maintaining engine room logs, and ensuring operational readiness

Starting, operating, and securing vessel engines during navigation, port, or underway operations
-
Inspecting and servicing steering mechanisms, HVAC, pumping assemblies, and other onboard machinery

Enforcing safety procedures, firefighting, damage control, and sanitation aboard vessels

Preparing work orders and maintenance schedules for routine and extensive repairs
Watercraft Engineers typically receive specialized training that includes advanced knowledge of internal combustion engines, marine electrical/electronic systems, welding, and machine shop fabrication. With experience, they can take on leadership roles such as senior marine engineman, chief engineer, or marine maintenance supervisor.
This role requires strong mechanical aptitude, problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work in demanding maritime environments.
