A sewing machine fitter, also known as a sewing machine mechanic, is responsible for the maintenance and repair of sewing machines: 
  • Troubleshooting: Diagnose and fix mechanical, electrical, and electronic issues 
     
  • Maintenance: Perform regular maintenance and preventive checks 
     
  • Repairing: Replace broken or worn-out parts 
     
  • Adjusting: Adjust machine parts, such as the needle length and stroke, and the timing 
     
  • Training: Educate operators and other mechanics on how to use and maintain the machines 
     
  • Record keeping: Maintain accurate records of maintenance and repairs 
     
  • Safety: Comply with safety rules 
     
  • Work area: Keep the work area clean and organized 
     
  • Staying current: Stay up-to-date with the latest sewing machine technology and industry advancements 
     


Sewing machine fitters can work in clothing factories, machine manufacturers, large boutiques, or be self-employed. They may need to be able to sit or stand for long periods, bend, reach, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and use their hands and fingers. They may also need to be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds frequently and 75 pounds occasionally.
