Assistant / Deputy Manager Operation Blast Furnace & Control Room

Role & responsibilities

1. Furnace Operation & Process Control

  • Operate and monitor Blast Furnace parameters using PLC/DCS/SCADA systems.
  • Maintain burden descent rate, stock line, top pressure, and blast parameters.
  • Ensure effective gas distribution and top gas efficiency (CO/CO ratio).
  • Optimize oxygen enrichment, steam injection, and PCI rate.
  • Coordinate with Stock House for proper charging sequence and burden distribution.
  • Support in implementing daily production plans and operational instructions.

2. Production & Quality Management

  • Achieve targeted hot metal production and maintain metallurgical balance.
  • Control hot metal composition (Si, P, S) and temperature as per quality norms.
  • Monitor coke rate, sinter, pellets, and gas utilization for optimal efficiency.
  • Analyze process data and suggest improvements for productivity and fuel optimization.

3. Control Room Operations & Data Management

  • Supervise real-time control room monitoring and data logging.
  • Track operational trends, alarms, and deviations to initiate corrective actions.
  • Coordinate with field teams during tuyere, bustle main, and valve operations.
  • Maintain shift-wise data, reports, and daily performance summaries.

4. Troubleshooting & Emergency Response

  • Identify and handle abnormalities like hanging, slipping, or scaffolding.
  • Respond promptly to fluctuations in blast pressure, charging delays, or power issues.
  • Ensure safe and stable operation during casting, blow-in, or blow-down activities.

5. Coordination & Team Support

  • Collaborate with Cast House, Stock House, Blower House, PCI, and Gas Cleaning teams.
  • Coordinate with Maintenance (Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation) during breakdowns.
  • Provide clear operational instructions to shift engineers and operators.
  • Ensure smooth communication during shift handovers.

6. Safety, Health & Environment (SHE)

  • Adhere strictly to Blast Furnace safety standards and SOPs.
  • Ensure PPE usage and participate in safety audits and drills.
  • Report unsafe conditions, near-misses, and process deviations.
  • Maintain housekeeping and cleanliness in the control room and work areas.

7. Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate shift logs, cast records, and operational parameters.
  • Record and report data on hot blast pressure, temperature, gas composition, and burden charges.
  • Prepare daily performance reports and assist in process reviews.

Preferred candidate profile

Qualifications:

B.E. / B.Tech / Diploma in Metallurgical, Mechanical, Production, or Electrical Engineering.

Experience:

  • Assistant Manager: 47 years in Blast Furnace operation & control room.
  • Deputy Manager: 7–10 years with experience in furnace control systems and process optimization.

    Experience in integrated steel plants and automation systems preferred.
