Software Release Engineer
Role Summary:
The Software Release Engineer is responsible for managing the end-to-end release process across multiple environments — from code integration and build validation to CAB approvals, production deployments, and audit compliance. This position demands deep technical expertise in CI/CD pipelines, Git workflow management, and release governance under ITIL-aligned processes. You will execute controlled releases, maintain change records, and uphold traceability from commit to deployment while ensuring full compliance with corporate and regulatory requirements
Key Responsibilities:
Code Integration & Build Automation:
· Merge, rebase, and cherry-pick code across active branches using industry-standard Git workflows (GitFlow, Trunk, or hybrid).
· Manage tagging, release branching, and rollback branches to maintain traceable release lineage.
· Configure, trigger, and troubleshoot builds using Jenkins, GitLab CI/CD, or Azure Pipelines.
· Ensure artifact signing, dependency locking, and build reproducibility across environments.
Smoke and Validation Testing:
· Integrate automated smoke and sanity tests post-build before QA handoff or CAB submission.
· Validate environment health and build stability through CI/CD quality gates.
· Collaborate with QA to confirm regression coverage and pre-production signoffs.
Release Governance and CAB Coordination:
· Lead and present Change Advisory Board (CAB) meetings for each scheduled release, presenting risk assessments, change scope, and rollback strategies.
· Prepare and maintain change requests (RFCs) for each build promotion, ensuring formal approval before production movement.
· Conduct release readiness reviews, Go/No-Go calls, and document outcome summaries per CAB decisions.
Audit Trails & Compliance:
· Maintain auditable logs of all release activities, including merge histories, build run IDs, deployment timestamps, and approval decisions.
· Ensure compliance with standards such as ISO 27001 by enforcing documented change control.
· Participate in periodic release audits, providing detailed evidence of approvals, risks mitigated, and rollback outcomes.
· Contribute to continuous improvement of change control policies and documentation standards.
Deployment and Rollback Execution:
· Execute and monitor deployments across QA, staging, and production environments, using blue-green or canary rollout strategies where applicable.
· Automate rollback triggers and maintain rollback playbooks in version-controlled repositories.
· Work collaboratively with SRE and Infrastructure teams to maintain release reliability and compliance.
Reporting and Documentation:
· Publish comprehensive release notes, impact documents, build manifests, and version histories.
· Maintain audit dashboards and release calendars accessible to QA, Product, and Security stakeholders.
· Generate compliance reports summarizing deviations, exceptions, and control effectiveness.
Vulnerability Assessment and Security:
· Collaborate with security teams to integrate vulnerability scanning and assessment into the release pipeline, using tools such as OWASP ZAP, Snyk, or Nessus to detect and remediate security vulnerabilities.
· Ensure compliance with security best practices, including regular penetration testing, dependency scanning for known vulnerabilities, and secure code practices during the release process.
· Review and approve releases based on vulnerability assessment results, mitigating high-risk issues prior to deployment and documenting any accepted risks.
Ideal Candidate Profile:
You are a hands-on release engineer who thrives in enterprise-controlled environments.
You understand how every code commit ties into a compliance-approved release and can:
· Merge branches, fix conflicts, and validate builds quickly.
· Drive CAB meetings, secure change approvals, and close audit findings.
· Deliver stable, traceable, and compliant software releases with full visibility and accountability.
Qualifications:
· Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field; a Master's degree is a plus.
· Proven experience (3-7 years) as a Release Manager or in a similar role within the software development lifecycle, preferably in DevOps or Agile environments.
· Strong project management and organizational skills, with experience in tools like Azure DevOps or similar.
· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including advanced verbal and written abilities for cross-team coordination.
· Knowledge of version control systems (e.g., Git)and release management tools.
· Familiarity with Agile, DevOps, Scrum, Kanban, or Waterfall methodologies, with hands-on experience participating in sprint planning meetings.
· Experience with automation tools for release management (e.g., Jenkins) and CI/CD pipelines is required.
· Working knowledge of software development lifecycle (SDLC), application infrastructure, system architecture, and programming basics.
· Proficiency in code quality tools (e.g., SonarQube) and vulnerability assessment tools (e.g., Snyk, Veracode, OWASP tools).
· Problem-solving and decision-making abilities in a fast-paced environment.
· Demonstrated ability to coordinate cross-functional work teams toward task completion.
· Demonstrated effective leadership, analytical, and time management skills.
· Experience with cloud platforms, containerization, and orchestration tools is a plus.
Bonus Skills:
· Exposure on usage of AI Tools
