Position : Staff Nurse - NICU

Reports To : Ward Manager

1.    Job Purpose

  • Provides care for children and adolescents with life threatening or high- acuity conditions that require constant monitoring.
  • Responsible to deliver a professional, safe and quality patient care through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation.
  • Responsible for effective communication with patients, relatives and members of the health care team
  • Responsible for patient and family satisfaction
  • Adhere to all clinical and nursing protocol as per Hospital Policies of Sir H N Reliance Foundation

2.    Accountabilities

Key Responsibilities: Service

  • Deliver safe and quality nursing care in conformance with the Sir HN RFH policies and processes.
  • Ensure patient safety at all times according to hospital policies
  • Ensure that patient privacy and confidentiality is duly protected at all times
  • Treat patients and their family with courtesy, respect, and caring behavior
  • Ensure effective patient care delivery and achievement of desired patient outcomes in collaborate with other professional disciplines
  • Ensure nursing quality indicators are within the defined benchmark
  • Take immediate action to resolve any issues / complaint / distress expressed in any way by the patient or family within her limits and escalate to higher level
  • Receive the patient, check the identification & orient to the unit.
  • Perform nursing assessment, identify patient needs and develop appropriate measureable individualized nursing care plan in consultation with Ward Manager 
  • Management of neonates with ventilator care, central lines, arterial blood gas interpretation, and analysis of lab results
  • Respond to life-saving situations, using clinical guidelines and protocols for treatment under supervision of Ward Manager  
  • Ensure correct implementation of pediatric Drug calculation and Infusion protocol
  • Ensure safety of patient by adhering to policies of patient identification, fall prevention, safe medication management and prevention of infection.
  • Monitoring and management of patients with cardiac , inotropes and sedation medications, rhythm strip analysis, identifying arrhythmias
  • Administers infusion therapy, including: IV fluids, antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, electrolytes, lipids
  • Use effective communication, written and verbal at all levels of staff including the multi-disciplinary team, patients and relatives.
  • Monitor patients on regular basis to assess and reassess progress and trends that require interventions and inform Ward Manager 
  • Assist the Consultants on clinical rounds. Provide medication and nursing care as per the clinical orders
  • Coordinate admission, transfer and discharge process ensuring adherence to stipulated timelines
  • Ensure that the discharge planning and health education is given as per the protocol with respect to each patient
  • Maintain and update accurate documentation in Hospital Information System with respect to assigned clinical responsibilities
  • Provide a high tech children service area for critically ill, medically complex and post-surgical patients
  • Ensures Infection control practices like Hand hygiene , safe Infusion practices, Care Bundles, proper waste segregation, isolation protocols etc.
  • Demonstrate BLS, NRP & NALS skills.
  • Monitor vigilantly and identify and report early warning signs
  • Demonstrate clinical skills and knowledge in the delivery of patient care. Assists with the insertion or discontinuation of UVC,UAC catheters , and endotracheal tubes, procedures in NICU
  • Understand life threatening arrhythmias and to act accordingly.
  • Ensures ventilators, monitors and other types of medical equipments functions properly and demonstrate the skill of handling it.
  • Administer intravenous fluids, inotropic infusions and other medications competently.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of performing different diagnostic test as per physicians order.
  • Assists patients in kangaroo mother care.
  • Monitors and record patient vital signs and other necessary parameters as frequently as per patients condition.
  • Notify any abnormal finding and early warning signs immediately to the physician.
  • Document critical parameters and condition of patients in HIS.
  • Identify unsafe care practices and contribute to corrective action.
  • Adhere to evidence based practices in the clinical area
  • Coordinate with support services / functions interdepartmental for investigations, etc
  • Attend on call emergency care in case of need
  • Participate as per the defined role during any internal / external disaster 
  • Any other responsibility as assigned by the HOD
  • Identify unsafe care practices and contribute to corrective action.
  • Actively participate in in service education programs according to the organizational policy

  • Actively participate in infection control and prevention activities, campaigns, awareness sessions etc.
  • Actively participate and be accountable for implementation of all quality programs to ensure continuous quality improvement

  • Ensure optimal utilization of available resources ( drugs and consumable )
  • Ensure proper utilization of ward stock items and maintain its appropriate charging or stock consumption record
  • Ensure safe handling of biomedical equipments and prevent breakages

Key Responsibilities : People

  • Attend all in service Nursing/hospital trainings
  • Assist in orientation of new nursing staff and supervise them for safe patient care
  • Supervise PCAs / PTAs and ensure patient care
  • Ensure effective patient care delivery and achievement of desired patient outcomes in collaboration with other professional disciplines
  • Engage in training and educational program for freshers and new joinees to impart the protocols and hospital policies
  • Ensure effective communication with the health care team members by ensuring Hands off

Read back and verify Verbal /Telephonic orders/ critical alert reporting. No verbal order to be followed

Key Responsibilities: Innovations and Research

  • Identify and suggest new ideas/ feedback to enhance departmental operations and patient care
  • Plan and participate in clinical education, research, test medication and clinical tests to advance the practice of nursing as well as academic and teaching activities as required by the hospital.

4.    Experience & Educational Requirements

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Necessary:

    B. SC Degree in Nursing from a recognized nursing institute.

    Should have Maharashtra council registration

Desirable:

    Certifications BLS/ ACLS

RELEVANT EXPERIENCE:

Necessary:

Minimum 1 to 2 years of clinical experience in the relevant area
