Safety Officer

Role & responsibilities

The Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety (OHS) guidelines across the organization. This role involves inspecting work environments, developing safety policies, conducting risk assessments, training staff, and reporting on safety issues to prevent accidents, injuries, and health problems

Policy Implementation & Compliance

• Develop, implement, and maintain health and safety policies and procedures.
• Ensure company compliance with (ISO 45001 :2018 & EMS
• Keep safety documentation up to date and ensure it is accessible to staff.

Risk Assessment & Hazard Control

• Conduct site-specific risk assessments to identify hazards.
• Recommend and implement control measures to minimize risks.
• Regularly review and update risk assessments, especially after an incident or process change.

Inspections & Audits

• Perform regular safety inspections of the workplace, tools, equipment, and machinery.
• Conduct internal audits to evaluate compliance and identify areas for improvement.
• Report hazards or unsafe conditions and follow up on corrective actions.

Training & Education

• Organize and deliver safety training sessions for new and existing employees.
• Ensure workers are trained on emergency response, PPE usage, and job-specific risks.
• Promote a safety culture through ongoing awareness programs.

Incident Investigation & Reporting

• Investigate workplace incidents, accidents, and near misses.
• Analyse root causes and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
• Maintain accurate records of all incidents and generate reports for management.

Emergency Preparedness

• Develop and test emergency response plans (fire, chemical spill, evacuation, etc.).
• Coordinate safety drills and ensure all staff understand their roles during emergencies.
• Maintain first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and emergency equipment.

Monitoring & Reporting

• Monitor worker behavior to ensure compliance with safety procedures.
• Prepare and submit regular safety reports to management
• Track safety performance indicators

Coordination & Communication

• Work with department heads and supervisors to ensure safety standards are integrated into daily operations.
• Liaise with external safety consultants, regulatory bodies, and emergency services.
• Serve as a point of contact during safety inspections by government authorities.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

• Ensure appropriate PPE is provided, maintained, and used correctly.
• Conduct PPE audits and provide training on its use and limitations.

Continuous Improvement

• Stay updated with new safety technologies, practices, and regulatory changes.
• Recommend process improvements and contribute to the development of a proactive safety culture.

Pollution Control Board (PCB) Compliance

• Ensure the organization complies with environmental norms set by the State Pollution Control Board (TNPCB)
• Monitor and maintain records of air, water, noise, and waste emissions as per consent conditions (CTE/CTO).
• Coordinate for PCB inspections, consent renewals, and submission of compliance reports like Form I, Form III. Form IV, Form X & Annual Environment Statement, and Hazardous Waste Returns.
• Handle communication with environmental consultants and regulatory authorities.
• Ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste per PCB norms.

Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) Operations

• Oversee daily operations and maintenance of the ETP to ensure treated water meets discharge norms.
• Monitor influent and effluent parameters (pH, BOD, COD, TDS, etc.) and maintain logbooks.
• Ensure safe handling and dosing of chemicals used in the ETP.
• Coordinate with third-party labs for periodic environmental testing and analysis.
• Train ETP operators and ensure adherence to environmental safety practices.
