Core Database Administration

These tasks form the foundation of the role, ensuring the database environment is stable, secure, and available.

  • Database Maintenance and Operations:
  • Execute scheduled database backups and verify that all recovery processes are functional and data integrity is maintained.
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks, such as rebuilding indexes, updating statistics, and managing disk space to ensure optimal performance.
  • Apply patches, upgrades, and hotfixes to the Database Management System (DBMS) software (e.g., SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL) with minimal disruption.
  • Performance Monitoring and Tuning:
  • Monitor database performance metrics (CPU, memory, I/O, slow queries) and respond to system alerts.
  • Assist in basic SQL query optimization and tuning to improve application response times, often collaborating with developers.
  • Security and Access Management:
  • Manage user accounts, roles, and access permissions to control who can view and modify data.
  • Help implement and monitor basic security measures to protect sensitive data and comply with organizational policies..
  • Troubleshooting and Support (Tier 1/2):
  • Diagnose and resolve common database issues, such as connectivity problems, failed jobs, or basic user access failures.
  • Provide technical support to developers, analysts, and end-users regarding database queries and data retrieval.
  • Escalate complex or high-priority issues to senior administrators or engineering teams as necessary.
  • Documentation and Standards:
  • Create and maintain clear, up-to-date documentation for database configurations, maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting steps.
  • Help enforce data standards and naming conventions across the organization's data assets.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
  • Work closely with application development and infrastructure teams, using digital communication tools (Slack, Teams, video conferencing) to manage requests and project updates effectively.
  • Participate in disaster recovery and high-availability testing procedures, documenting the remote execution steps
  • Data Integrity and Quality:
  • Monitor and execute processes for data loading, migration, and transformation (ETL/ELT).
  • Perform checks and implement basic validation rules to ensure data accuracy and consistency.
  • Development Support:
  • Assist developers by creating database objects (tables, stored procedures, views) in development and staging environments.
