Job Description

The Test Architect is responsible for defining and governing the overall testing strategy, frameworks, and practices for mission-critical enterprise platforms running across multiple on-premises data centres and a DR site. This role ensures that functional, integration, regression, performance, security, GIS, and DR testing are designed and executed in a consistent, automated, and repeatable way across legacy and modernized components. The Test Architect works closely with application, integration, GIS, infrastructure, DevOps, and security teams to enable high-quality releases as the platform transitions from monolithic and legacy stacks to microservices, modern web UIs, and containerized workloads.

Responsibilities include:

• Define the end-to-end test strategy and test architecture for a large, mission-critical platform, covering functional, integration, regression, system, UAT support, and non-functional testing (performance, reliability, security, usability).
• Design a comprehensive test approach that supports coexistence of legacy and modernized components (web, desktop, mobile/MDT, APIs, GIS services), ensuring regression coverage across phased rollouts and multiple data centres/DR.
• Establish and govern test automation frameworks for APIs, UI (web and mobile), and backend services, promoting high levels of automation in CI/CD pipelines.
• Define test plans and standards for integration testing across modules and external systems (for example, government systems, telephony, GIS, messaging platforms, and databases).
• Collaborate with DevOps and Infrastructure teams to align test environments, environment configuration, and data refresh strategies with deployment models, including active-active DC and DR.
• Define non-functional testing strategies (for example, performance, load, stress, soak, failover, and DR testing) and ensure they are executed as part of major releases.
• Set up and maintain standards for test data management, including anonymization or masking where needed, to ensure realistic and secure test datasets.
• Provide leadership and guidance to QA and test teams, ensuring consistent application of test processes, tools, and best practices across projects.

Primary Skills :

Technical Skills

• Strong experience designing and implementing test automation frameworks for web UIs (for example, Selenium, Playwright, Cypress), APIs (for example, REST-assured, Postman/Newman, Karate), and backend services.
• Solid understanding of testing strategies for microservices and distributed systems, including contract testing, integration testing, and end-to-end scenario testing.
• Experience with performance and load testing tools (for example, JMeter, Gatling, Locust) to validate throughput, latency, and resource utilization under realistic and peak loads.
• Familiarity with CI/CD tools (for example, Azure DevOps, Jenkins, GitLab CI) and integrating automated tests into pipelines as quality gates.
• Understanding of testing in complex, on-premises environments that involve multiple application tiers, GIS services (for example, ArcGIS), databases (for example, Oracle), and message buses/streaming platforms (for example, Kafka).
• Knowledge of test management tools (for example, Azure Test Plans, JIRA/Xray, Zephyr, or similar) for planning, execution, and traceability.
• Good understanding of software quality principles, risk-based testing, and test design techniques (for example, boundary value analysis, equivalence partitioning, combinatorial testing).

Experience and Soft Skills

• 8+ years of experience in software testing and quality engineering, with at least 3 - 4 years in a Test Architect or equivalent senior QA leadership role.
• Proven experience defining and implementing test strategies for large-scale, mission-critical systems with strict uptime and performance SLAs.
• Experience working in environments with multiple data centres and DR, including participation in failover and DR testing exercises.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work with architects, developers, DevOps, GIS, infrastructure, and business stakeholders.
• Ability to document test strategies, test architectures, standards, and procedures clearly and concisely.

Responsibilities

• Define and maintain a test governance model, including entry/exit criteria, defect severity/priority definitions, and release readiness criteria.
• Collaborate with Security and DevSecOps teams to ensure security testing (for example, SAST/DAST, vulnerability scanning) is included in the overall test strategy and pipeline.
• Support UAT and business testing by providing guidance on test scenarios, acceptance criteria, and tools for user-facing validation.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of testing practices, tools, and metrics, using data-driven insights to enhance quality and speed of delivery.
• Participate in incident reviews and post-release retrospectives to identify testing gaps and update strategies accordingly.

Technical Skills

• Experience with service virtualization and mocking tools to simulate unavailable or third-party systems during integration testing.
• Familiarity with test automation for desktop or rich-client applications where relevant.
• Understanding of observability and logging tools (for example, ELK/EFK, APM solutions) and how they can be used to support testing, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis.
• Knowledge of testing strategies for GIS applications (for example, validating map layers, geocoding accuracy, routing results, and real-time location updates).

Experience

• Prior involvement in modernization projects where legacy applications and UIs was gradually replaced with microservices and modern web front ends, with sustained test coverage across the transition.
• Experience working in regulated or high-compliance environments, ensuring traceability of requirements to test cases, results, and defects for audit purposes.

Secondary Skills :

Technical Skills and Experience

• Exposure to SRE and reliability engineering concepts (for example, SLOs, SLIs, error budgets) and how testing can support reliability goals.
• Experience with chaos engineering or resilience testing tools and practices.
• Familiarity with model-based testing, property-based testing, or other advanced testing techniques.
• Knowledge of test data generation tools and synthetic data strategies.
