Job Description

Key Responsibilities

• Review and proofread first-pass page proofs for grammar, punctuation, spelling, and typographic consistency.
• Compare typeset proofs against the copyedited manuscript to ensure all changes were implemented correctly.
• Identify and correct issues in:
• Page layout and formatting
• Captions, headings, and cross-references
• Numbering of figures, tables, footnotes, and endnotes
• Table of contents accuracy
• Flag typesetting and design inconsistencies, such as incorrect fonts, spacing, margins, or alignment.
• Ensure adherence to house style, author corrections, and publisher guidelines.
• Mark up proofs using standard proofreading symbols (digital or print, depending on workflow).
• Communicate clearly with the production/editorial team regarding queries, complex corrections, or unresolved editorial issues.
• Perform basic fact-checking and consistency checks for names, dates, references, and citations where required.
• Maintain version control and documentation of all changes for tracking and transparency.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in English, Publishing, Communications, or a related field.
• Proven experience (2–5 years) in proofreading, ideally in academic, educational, or professional publishing.
• Strong command of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
• Familiarity with style manuals (e.g., Chicago, APA, MLA) and house style guides.
• Excellent attention to detail and ability to concentrate for extended periods.
• Proficiency with proofreading tools and markup (PDF annotations, Adobe Acrobat, or other platforms).
• Ability to work independently, manage tight deadlines, and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
• Familiarity with publishing workflows and post-copyediting processes.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience proofreading STM, HSS, or trade publications.
• Understanding of XML or digital publishing processes.
• Experience in a remote, collaborative editorial environment.
