Field Assistant

POSITION SUMMARY - This position is based in Covalima (1), Ainaro (1), Manufahi (1), Manatuto (1)
Field Assistants will be trained to adhere to project standards, including gender-sensitive and culturally appropriate approaches, ensuring that all activities are implemented in a manner that respects local traditions and promotes inclusivity.
Acting as contact points between the project team and local stakeholders, the Field Assistants will play a vital role in building trust, fostering collaboration, and promoting the active involvement of communities in project initiatives.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Planning and Coordination
- Support the Field Coordinator in preparing field activity plans, schedules, and logistics for surveys, trainings, and community engagement.
- Coordinate with community groups and local authorities to ensure active participation and smooth implementation of activities.
- Serve as a liaison between the project team, local government representatives, and community members.
- Support awareness and advocacy efforts, helping to document and share best practices for replication or scaling.
Field Implementation
- Assist in biodiversity and socio-economic data collection, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timely submission.
- Conduct data entry and perform quality checks before submission to the project database or M&E team.
- Facilitate and co-facilitate community meetings, workshops, and field demonstrations, ensuring inclusive participation of women and youth.
- Support conservation, livelihood, and biodiversity monitoring activities as guided by the Field Coordinator or Technical Lead.
- Ensure that all field activities follow project safeguards, gender mainstreaming, and Rights-Based Approach (RBA) principles.
Reporting and Administration
- Maintain accurate field records, including attendance lists, photos, and meeting notes.
- Submit timely monthly progress reports, cash advance requests, and acquittals to the Field Coordinator.
- Ensure no outstanding cash advances and maintain proper documentation for all expenses.
- Communicate regularly with the Field Coordinator to provide updates, flag issues, and propose solutions.
Other Duties
- Provide logistical and operational support for trainings, workshops, and monitoring missions.
- Perform any other tasks assigned by the Field Coordinator or Technical Lead to ensure smooth field implementation.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Typical office environment. Ability to work extended hours or travel as needed.
- This position is based in Covalima, Ainaro, Manufahi, and Manatuto Municipalities, with frequent travel to Dili and other project sites as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Up to 2 years of experience in community-based or environmental fieldwork, preferably with NGOs, local government, or conservation projects.
- Proven ability to support data collection, field logistics, and community engagement activities.
- Basic understanding of biodiversity, conservation, or sustainable livelihoods.
- Ability to work effectively in a multicultural and field-based environment, often with limited supervision.
- Demonstrated teamwork, reliability, and problem-solving skills.
- Good communication and interpersonal abilities when engaging with local communities.
- Basic proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel) and data entry tools.
- Fluency in Tetum and working knowledge of English (spoken and written).
- Women are strongly encouraged to apply.
Preferred
- Technical diploma or bachelor's degree (preferred) in Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Forestry, Fisheries, or related field, or equivalent field experience.Experience working with communities, particularly those living in or near protected areas.
- Experience in community development and sustainable livelihood initiatives is highly desirable.
