• Financial analysis and modeling: Perform in-depth financial analysis of companies by examining their financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements. Analysts use this data to create detailed financial models, such as discounted cash flow (DCF) and comparable company analyses, to forecast company performance and assess valuation metrics.

• Research and monitoring: Stay up-to-date on market trends, industry developments, and macroeconomic factors that could impact the performance of stocks. They track news, earnings reports, and regulatory changes affecting the companies they cover.

• Reporting and communication: Create comprehensive reports and presentations that summarize their research findings, investment analyses, and recommendations. They must clearly and concisely communicate complex financial concepts to both internal teams and external clients.

• Making recommendations: Based on their analysis, provide buy, sell, or hold recommendations for a company's stock to help investors make informed decisions.

• Interacting with company management: Attend company meetings, industry conferences, and investor presentations to gather information and gain insights. They may also engage directly with the management of the companies they cover to discuss performance and strategy. 

Skills and qualifications

• Strong analytical skills: The ability to analyze and interpret large amounts of complex financial data is essential.

• Financial expertise: Deep knowledge of financial markets, investment strategies, and valuation techniques is required.

• Quantitative abilities: Proficiency with statistical techniques and formulas to analyze data and build financial models is necessary.

• Communication skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills for preparing reports and presenting findings.

• Technical proficiency: Expertise in financial databases and software like Bloomberg, FactSet, or Morningstar, as well as advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.

• Educational background: A bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or economics is typically required. A master's degree or a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation is often preferred. 

"Buy-side"

• Buy-side analyst: Works for firms that manage money for clients, such as hedge funds, mutual funds, or pension funds. They conduct research to help their firm's investment managers decide what securities to buy, hold, or sell for their portfolios.

Work environment

• The role often involves demanding schedules and long hours, especially during earnings seasons.

• The work can be high-pressure, as analysts are responsible for the accuracy of their recommendations.
