Special Purpose Machine (SPM) Engineer/ Designer – Plastic Manufacturing

Department: Engineering / Production

Location: Mumbai, Sakinaka

Reports To: Plant Manager / Head of Engineering

Job Type: Full-Time

Job Summary:

We are seeking a skilled and proactive SPM Engineer to oversee the design, implementation, operation, and maintenance of Special Purpose Machines in our plastic manufacturing facility. The ideal candidate will be responsible for ensuring that all SPMs run efficiently, reliably, and in accordance with production requirements for products such as HDPE pipes, storage units, tube mills, IBCs, composite cylinders, and other plastic-based components.

Key Responsibilities:

Machine Operation & Maintenance

  • Manage day-to-day operations of SPMs across extrusion, molding, cutting, welding, assembly, and testing lines.
  • Ensure uptime and availability of machines by implementing preventive and predictive maintenance schedules.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and automation-related issues to minimize downtime.

Process Optimization

  • Monitor and optimize SPM performance to improve cycle time, quality, and throughput.
  • Work closely with production and quality teams to fine-tune machine parameters based on product specs.

Design & Development

  • Collaborate with design teams or external vendors to develop or modify SPMs tailored for product-specific requirements (e.g., pipe socketing, composite winding, leak testing).
  • Participate in commissioning and validation of new machines and lines.

Quality & Compliance

  • Ensure machines meet all safety, quality, and regulatory standards.
  • Support in-line quality assurance processes through integration of inspection systems (e.g., vision systems, pressure testers).

Product-Specific Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain:
  • Pipe extrusion lines (HDPE, corrugated, etc.)
  • Filament winding machines for composite cylinders
  • Blow molding machines for IBCs
  • Injection molding forauxiliary product
  • Thermoforming, welding, and assembly stations for plastic storage systems
  • Configure and troubleshoot ancillary systems like cooling units, conveyors, curing ovens, and robotic pickers.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate logs of maintenance, breakdowns, changeovers, and improvements.
  • Provide regular reports on machine performance, downtime analysis, and efficiency metrics (OEE, MTTR, MTBF).

Qualifications & Skills:

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree / Diploma in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Industrial, or Electrical Engineering.

Experience:

  • 4–8 years of experience working with SPMs in a plastic or related manufacturing industry.

Technical Skills:

  • Hands-on experience with extrusion, blow molding, filament winding, welding, and assembly machines.
  • Familiarity with PLCs, HMIs, sensors, and SCADA systems.
  • Knowledge of pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
  • Understanding of quality control systems and defect detection tools.

Soft Skills:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and team collaboration.
  • Attention to detail and safety-conscious mindset.

Desirable (Nice-to-Have):

  • Experience with automation and Industry 4.0 technologies.
  • Exposure to lean manufacturing or Six Sigma tools.
  • Knowledge of CAD/CAM software for machine modification or design.
