The OT Scrub Nurse provides skilled assistance to the surgical team during operative procedures, ensuring adherence to aseptic techniques, surgical protocols, and patient safety standards. The role involves preparing and maintaining the sterile field, handling instruments and supplies, and supporting the team before, during, and after surgery.

Key Responsibilities: Pre-operative Duties:

  • Prepare the operating room with necessary equipment, instruments, and supplies according to the surgical list.
  • Check functionality, sterility, and completeness of surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Verify patient identity, surgical site, and procedure as part of the surgical safety checklist.
  • Assist in positioning and draping the patient for surgery while maintaining aseptic conditions.
  • Ensure the availability of sterile solutions, dressings, sutures, and required medications.

Intra-operative Duties:

  • Maintain a sterile field throughout the procedure.
  • Hand instruments and supplies to the surgeon efficiently and anticipate their needs.
  • Count surgical instruments, sponges, and sharps with the circulating nurse as per policy.
  • Ensure safe handling of specimens and maintain accurate labeling.
  • Monitor the sterile field for any contamination and take corrective actions if needed.
  • Support the surgical team with suctioning, retracting, and other technical assistance when required.

Post-operative Duties:

  • Assist with the safe transfer of the patient from the operating table to the recovery area.
  • Conduct final counts and ensure all instruments and materials are accounted for.
  • Clean and prepare instruments for sterilization and restock the OT for subsequent procedures.
  • Document surgical details, counts, and any incidents accurately in patient records and OT logs.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Education: Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
  • License: Registered Nurse with a valid nursing council license.
  • Experience: 1–3 years of experience as an OT or Scrub Nurse (freshers with OT training may be considered).
  • Certifications: BLS/ACLS preferred; additional perioperative nursing certification is an advantage.

  • Strong knowledge of surgical instruments and procedures.
  • Proficiency in aseptic and sterile techniques.
  • Attention to detail and high degree of manual dexterity.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure in a multidisciplinary team.

  • Commitment to patient safety and infection control practices.
