About This Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity to make a significant contribution to the research aims of the Australasian Kidney Trials Network (AKTN). ATKN is a collaborative research group with an international track record in the design and conduct of investigator-initiated clinical trials in kidney disease. The successful applicant will contribute as a member of a team of clinical research specialists by providing high level expertise and leadership in the delivery of statistical and programming services for AKTN trials, methodological work related to AKTN trials, as well as offering statistical advice and education to the broader kidney disease research community.

Key responsibilities will include:
Research- Providing trial statistician advice and support in the design, conduct, analysis, and reporting of investigator-initiated clinical trials- Collaborate on methodological research relevant to the design and analysis of clinical trials-
- Prepare and review statistical programs for data processing, statistical analysis, and presentation of results- Prepare statistical analysis plans, statistical reports for Data and Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) meetings, and final statistical reports- Liaise with central operations and data management staff and external vendors for matters related to AKTN’s research activities-
- Review and draw upon best practice research methodologies

At Level C- Maintain an active record of producing quality research outputs consistent with discipline norms as lead contributor, by publishing or exhibiting in national research journals, and other appropriate refereed publications and conference publicationsTeaching and Learning- As a ‘research focused’ position there is no formal requirement for undergraduate teaching. However, it is encouraged that teaching opportunities are actively sought- Contribute to supervision of Honours students and Higher Degree by Research students (as appropriate)- Contribute to the development and delivery of workshops and short courses on statistics and clinical trial methodology

At Level C- Where undergraduate and postgraduate teaching is undertaken achieve teaching quality as indicated by approved surveys and outcomes for students and improve or innovate where appropriate in response to feedback.

Supervision and Researcher Development- Attract and supervise higher research degree students in areas relevant to AKTN’s research activities- Provide leadership and support for junior statisticians working in the team- Manage HR matters for the research methods team, including employee recruitment, effective allocation and supervision of tasks, ongoing professional development, and performance appraisal and management- Contribute to the development and delivery of workshops and short courses on statistics and clinical trial methodology

At Level C- Act as Principal Supervisor to Higher Degree by Research students.- Demonstrates and leads others in the responsible conduct of research.- Demonstrates personal effectiveness in supervision and management and development of researcher capability and skill.- Lead the facilitation of engagement opportunities for supervisees

Citizenship and Service- Attend and contribute to trial management and steering committee meetings- Perform administrative functions associated with the statistical aspects of clinical trial operations, including writing and review of standard operating procedures- Ensure team compliance in relation to all required standards, policies and training activities, including online and face to face training.- Participate in community and professional development activities relevant to the role- Other duties as reasonably directed by the Chair of AKTN’s Executive Operations Secretariat

Code of Conduct


About You- A higher degree or PhD in statistics or biostatistics- At least four (4) to ten (10) years relevant experience in the field of statistics, biostatistics, or other discipline with a substantial quantitative component or an equivalent combination of relevant experience, education, and training- Demonstrated expert knowledge in the design and analysis of clinical trials- Advanced skills using R is preferred; if not, a willingness to become proficient in R and competence and capability using other packages, particularly SAS and/or STATA- A team player with exce
