**Monitoring Vital Signs**: NICU nurses regularly assess and monitor the vital signs of newborns, including heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, temperature, and oxygen saturation levels. They are responsible for recognizing any abnormalities and taking appropriate actions.
**Administering Medications**: NICU nurses administer medications to newborns as prescribed by the attending physicians. They ensure accurate dosages and closely monitor the infants for any adverse reactions or side effects.
**Providing Respiratory Support**: Newborns in the NICU often require respiratory support, such as oxygen therapy, mechanical ventilation, or continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). NICU nurses assist with the setup, monitoring, and management of respiratory equipment.
**Performing Procedures**: NICU nurses are trained to perform various procedures, such as inserting intravenous (IV) lines, drawing blood samples, inserting feeding tubes, and managing umbilical catheters. They follow strict protocols to ensure the safety and well-being of the infants.
**Monitoring and Managing IV Fluids and Nutrition**: NICU nurses oversee and manage intravenous fluids, total parenteral nutrition (TPN), and enteral feedings for newborns who are unable to feed orally. They carefully monitor the infants' intake, output, and nutritional status.
**Collaborating with the Interdisciplinary Team**: NICU nurses work closely with a multidisciplinary team, including neonatologists, pediatricians, respiratory therapists, occupational therapists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals. They actively participate in care planning, case discussions, and patient handoffs.
**Providing Family-Centered Care**: NICU nurses provide support and education to parents and family members of the newborns. They offer emotional support, explain medical procedures, and encourage family involvement in the care of their infants.
**Documenting and Reporting**:Accurate documentation is essential in the NICU. Nurses maintain detailed records of assessments, interventions, medications, and changes in the infants' condition. They communicate relevant information to the healthcare team during shift changes and handovers.
**Maintaining a Sterile Environment**: NICU nurses ensure a clean and sterile environment to minimize the risk of infections. They adhere to strict infection control protocols and follow proper hand hygiene practices.
**Emotional Support**: NICU nurses provide emotional support to families during what can be a stressful and emotional time. They offer reassurance, empathy, and a listening ear to parents and family members.
