**Role of a civil lawyer**

In a civil case, the party who files the case is called a plaintiff, while the other party is referred to as the defendant. The civil lawyer, who represents them, then handles the litigation. Only private civil lawyers can take civil cases, and each party pays for their legal representation. The civil lawyers are responsible for all tasks that revolve around the case, including:

- Meeting involved parties and interviewing them to build a strong case
- Meeting witnesses and taking statements
- Setting up communication with the opposing party's lawyers
- Setting up communication with the court
- Filing motions, required documents and briefs
- Negotiating settlements with the opposing party's lawyers
- Arguing the case in the presence of a judge

**Role of a criminal lawyer**

A criminal lawyer defends individuals or organisations involved in crimes prohibited as per the laws of respective governments. In a criminal case, the central or state government files the case. A public prosecutor represents the government. The accused is called a defendant, and a criminal lawyer represents them. A criminal lawyer can be a public defender or have a private practice. Their responsibility is to prevent or minimise punishment for their clients. Common criminal cases include theft, homicide, assault, domestic violence, tax evasion, fraud, narcotics and human trafficking. Once a defendant appoints a criminal lawyer, their tasks include:

- Researching previous cases and building a defence
- Investigating crime scenes as well as evidence gathered from the crime scene
- Collecting further evidence and interviewing witnesses
- Building a strategy for the case
- Drafting, filing and countering appeals

**Salary**: Up to ₹40,000.00 per month
