Key Responsibilities:
Metadata Creation and Maintenance:Create and edit metadata records for spatial datasets using appropriate metadata standards (e.g., ISO 19115, FGDC).
Ensure that metadata accurately reflect the content, quality, and characteristics of GIS data.
Regularly review and update metadata to reflect changes in the data, ensuring currency and accuracy.
Metadata Standards and Best Practices:Stay up-to-date with industry standards and best practices related to GIS metadata.
Implement and enforce metadata standards to ensure consistency and interoperability across datasets.
Provide guidance to GIS professionals and data managers on proper metadata creation and management.
Data Documentation:Work closely with GIS analysts, data scientists, and other stakeholders to gather necessary information for metadata creation.
Document data sources, methodologies, and any relevant information that adds context to the spatial datasets.
Quality Control:Perform quality checks on metadata to identify and rectify inaccuracies or inconsistencies.
Review metadata submissions from various sources to maintain data integrity and quality.
Communicate metadata-related information to internal teams and external stakeholders as needed.
Metadata Repository Management:Organize and manage a central repository for storing metadata records, ensuring accessibility and ease of retrieval.
Implement and maintain metadata cataloging systems and tools.
Training and Support:Provide training and guidance to GIS professionals and other relevant staff members on metadata creation, standards, and tools.
Offer technical support to individuals needing assistance with metadata-related tasks.
Continuous Improvement:Identify opportunities to enhance metadata management processes and recommend improvements.
Participate in discussions and initiatives aimed at improving overall GIS data management practices.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Bachelor's degree in Geography, GIS, Computer Science, Environmental Science, or related field (Master's degree preferred).
- Strong knowledge of GIS concepts, spatial data formats, and metadata standards (ISO 19115, FGDC, etc.).
- Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) and metadata management tools.
- Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Problem-solving skills with a focus on data accuracy and quality.
- Familiarity with data management best practices is a plus.
