**Work Experience / Education**:

- Minimum 2 -3 yrs. of phlebotomy experience preferred or a combination of a health care degree, certification, and/or three or more year's relevant healthcare experience.
- DMLT/B.Sc. MLT degree is required.
- Venipuncture / Capillary Blood Collection.

**Critical skills**:

- Detail oriented. Phlebotomists must draw the correct vials of blood for the tests ordered, track vials of blood, and enter data into a database.

- Work Well Under Pressure.

**Key Result Areas**:

- Using technical equipment to safely draw blood from patients
- Explaining the process of drawing blood clearly to a patient
- Reassuring and calming patients who might be nervous or scared of the procedure
- Registering the blood and storing it in the correct environment
- Sending blood samples to testing laboratories
- Keeping track of blood samples and results that are returned after testing
- Updating patient records
- Maintaining an organized and clean work area based on health and safety regulations and the guidelines of the medical institution
- Answering patient questions regarding collection techniques and offering additional resources on the collection process, if the patient requests them

**Job Responsibilities and Duties**:

- Collects blood specimens via venipuncture and skin puncture according to physician orders applicable to regulations, policies and procedures to ensure complete and accurate specimens for testing.
- Ensures the patient is provided the necessary information and is comfortable and safe.
- Identifies patient, communicates the procedures to be done and performs assigned phlebotomy duties.
- Adheres to established safety guidelines inclusive of the use of appropriate equipment and practices.
- Obtains the required specimens, labels and transports specimens to specified area.
- Prepares specimens for processing and completes paperwork associated with the test ordered.
- Manages incoming calls while providing necessary information.
- Greeting patients and/or their representatives and providing direction as needed.
- Scheduling or pre-scheduling patient appointments, if applicable.
