Infection Control Nurse

1. Nursing care is a direct service, which includes various components needed to maintain or restore individual’s optimum health status.
2. Assessing and reporting physiological, pathological, and psychological, signs symptoms of the patient.
3. Nursing care starts from entry to exit: (from admission to discharge)
4. ICN supervises and advises on the already established protocols for infection prevention
5. ICN along with the infection control team traces down the source of an organism which has proliferated into an infection
6. ICN coordinates with the various departments in the hospital as well as the ICC within and outside, so as to get the best information and thereby helping the staffs to work smoothly
7. Observes changes in-patient's condition and records, takes necessary action and reports to the concerned authority.
8. Giving psychological support to the patient.
9. Liaise closely with the hospital microbiology laboratory for scrutiny of inpatients investigation reports to detect pathogenesis.
10. Correlates the pathogenic organisms to the respected areas in the hospital.
11. Collects and records data daily the number and time of infections etc using the established system and procedures.
12. Examines the medical records of the concerned patient, right from the time of admission. Doubts are cleared by checking with the nurses, doctors and patients accordingly and documenting it.
13. Interpret microbiology reports to relevant nursing staff.
14. Compiling the data in the logbook daily while on rounds and also a monthly report of statistical data to the ICC, which is neatly tabulated.
15. Supervise and advice on isolation techniques generally and in specific clinical situation.
16. Provide clinical advice and support to nurses, health care workers and non-clinical personnel on infection control issues.
17. Establishes a follow up surveillance of discharged patients.
18. Reviews all infection data with chairman of ICC.
19. Identify potential infection hazards and suggest appropriate remedial action to relevant personnel e.g. use of sharps, appropriate use of gloves, footwear etc.
20. Maintains records of needle stick injuries and post exposure prophylaxis.
21. Point surveillance and spot surveillance.
22. To improve, maintain and monitor the quality of infection prevention and control through daily and monthly audits.
23. To supervise through ward/ ICU visits, on infection prevention and control.
24. To ensure that infections and susceptible patients are placed in appropriate areas in order to minimize risk of infection.
25. Take appropriate measures to ensure to ensure the health and safety of patients, visitors and staff from blood and body fluids.
26. Reporting about communicable diseases to the public health department.
