**A hospital receptionist's job is to**support the medical staff and patients by performing a variety of administrative tasks**:

- **Welcoming patients**: Greet patients, vendors, and pharmaceutical representatives in person and by phone
- **Scheduling appointments**: Use manual or computerized systems to schedule appointments and remind patients of them
- **Maintaining patient records**: Collect and update patient information, including personal and financial details
- **Processing payments**: Receive payment for services, collect co-pays, and process insurance claims
- **Answering phones**: Answer and screen phone calls, take messages, and forward calls to the appropriate person
- **Assisting patients**: Help patients fill out medical forms, provide directions, and answer questions
- **Maintaining confidentiality**: Protect the confidentiality of patient and doctor's information
- **Keeping the reception area clean**: Ensure the reception area is clean and calm
- **Ordering supplies**: Keep track of office supplies and place orders when needed
- **Liaising with other departments**: Communicate with other medical departments, such as radiologists, medical specialists, or psychologists
- **Comforting patients**: Comfort distressed patients, and help solve any appointment issues
- **Preparing bills**: Prepare customer bills and specimen labels for the next day's patients

Some other responsibilities of a hospital receptionist include:

- Handling correspondence and file transfers
- Checking on medical staff throughout the day
- Ensuring that each patient has the proper documentation and sign-in sheets
- Attending required meetings
