Fashion Designer Merchandiser

Accountability: This position is accountable for Merchandising, Marketing, Production, Quality
control, Procurement, Sourcing, and Logistic monitoring of current products being produced and
new products.
As a Fashion designer specializing in creating new and unique clothing and fashion items from old
and discarded cloth material (up cycling) and new cloths, you shall be responsible for.
- Creating new designs and variations with different fabrics, textures, colours, and patterns to
create distinctive and one-of-a-kind pieces.
- Up cycling which involves taking discarded or old garments and materials and transforming
them into fashionable and unique pieces? This expertise extends to various materials,
including clothing, têxtiles, and accessories
- Tailoring and Construction: A strong foundation in traditional tailoring and garment
construction. This expertise ensures that their up cycled creations are not only visually
appealing but also well-crafted and durable.
- Sustainability: Committed to sustainable fashion practices. They source materials from thrift
stores, têxtile waste, and other sustainable suppliers. By up cycling, they reduce waste and
minimize their environmental footprint.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Design Conceptualization: Create unique clothing designs or adapt existing patterns to
match the client's vision. Consider factors like fabric selection, colour, style, and overall
aesthetics.
2. Pattern Making: Develop patterns and templates based on the client's measurements and
design specifications. Ensure that the patterns are precise to achieve a perfect fit.
3. Fabric Selection: Choose appropriate fabrics based on the design, climate, and client's
preferences. Consider factors like texture, weight, and durability.
4. Cutting and Sewing: Cut fabric according to patterns and then sew the pieces together,
paying close attention to detail. This involves various sewing techniques, including stitching,
hemming, and finishing.
5. Quality Control: Inspect finished garments for any defects or imperfections and ensure they
meet the client's expectations in terms of design and fit.
6. Fashion Trends: Stay updated on current fashion trends, styles, and techniques to offer
clients contemporary and fashionable designs.
As a merchandiser you shall play a pivotal role in ensuring that products reach the right customers
at the right time and in the right quantities. Their scope of work typically encompasses the following
key areas:
1. Product Planning and Selection
- Market research: Analysing market trends, consumer preferences, and competitor
activities to identify potential product opportunities.
- Product sourcing: Identifying and selecting suitable products from suppliers or
manufacturers.
- Product range planning: Determining the assortment of products to be offered,
considering factors such as seasonality, customer demand, and profitability.
2. Inventory Management
- Stock level planning: Forecasting demand and ensuring optimal inventory levels to avoid
stock outs or excess stock.
- Stock control: Monitoring inventory levels, tracking stock movements, and managing
returns.
- Purchase order processing: Placing orders with suppliers, managing lead times, and
coordinating deliveries.
3. Pricing and Promotions
- Pricing strategy: Developing pricing strategies to maximize sales and profitability.
- Promotional planning: Creating and implementing promotional campaigns, including
discounts, sales, and special offers.
- Price negotiation: Negotiating prices with suppliers to achieve favourable terms.
4. Visual Merchandising
- Store layout: Designing and implementing store layouts that are visually appealing and
promote product sales.
- Product displays: Creating attractive product displays that highlight key features and
encourage customer purchases.
- Window displays: Designing and managing window displays to attract customers and
showcase products.
5. Sales Analysis and Reporting
- Sales data analysis: Analysing sales data to identify trends, performance metrics, and
areas for improvement.
- Reporting: Preparing sales reports and providing insights to management.
- Performance evaluation: Evaluating the performance of products, categories, and
promotions.
6. Customer Relationship Management
- Customer feedback: Gathering customer feedback and addressing their concerns.
- Customer service: Providing support to customers and resolving issues.
- Customer loyalty programs: Developing and managing customer loyalty programs to
encourage repeat business.
7. Supplier Relationship Management
- Supplier selection: Evaluating and selecting suppliers based on factors such as quality,
reliability, and pricing.
- Supplier management: Managing relationships with suppliers, ensuring timely deliveries,
and resolving any issues.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Sewing and Tailoring Skills: Proficiency in sewing techniques, pattern making, and garment
construction is essential.
