
L5 - Supervisor Medical Coding- Job Description

As a Supervisor Medical Coding, you will oversee and coordinate the activities of the medical coding team, ensuring accurate and efficient coding practices. Your role involves managing the coding operations, providing guidance and training to team members, and ensuring compliance with coding guidelines and healthcare regulations. You will act as a liaison between the coding team and other departments, playing a critical role in maintaining the quality and efficiency of the coding process.
**Key Responsibilities**:
- **Team Management**: Lead and coordinate the medical coding team, ensuring adherence to coding standards and efficiency in processing.
- **Quality Assurance**: Monitor and review the accuracy of coding performed by team members, and implement quality control measures to ensure compliance with industry standards.
- **Training & Development**: Provide training and ongoing support to coding staff on coding practices, updates to coding guidelines, and system usage.
- **Process Improvement**: Identify and implement process improvements to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of coding operations.
- **Compliance**: Ensure that coding practices comply with relevant healthcare regulations, payer requirements, and organizational policies.
- **Reporting & Analysis**: Prepare and present regular reports on coding metrics, productivity, and quality to management. Analyze trends and make recommendations for improvements.
- **Cross-Functional Collaboration**: Collaborate with other departments, such as billing and compliance, to resolve coding-related issues and support the revenue cycle process.
- **Problem Resolution**: Address and resolve any coding-related issues or discrepancies, and provide guidance to the team on complex coding scenarios.
- Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Health Information Management, or a related field.
- Certification as a CPC (Certified Professional Coder) or CCS (Certified Coding Specialist) is highly preferred.
- Minimum of 6 years of experience in medical coding, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or coordinator role.
- In-depth knowledge of medical coding systems (ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS) and healthcare regulations.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
- Proven ability to analyze data, identify trends, and implement process improvements.
- Proficiency in coding software and electronic health record (EHR) systems.
