
Port Captain

The Port Captain will be responsible for overseeing and managing cargo loading and discharging operations on behalf of the shipowner. This role requires close coordination with port authorities, terminal operators, and vessel crews to ensure that all operations are conducted safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulatory requirements. The Port Captain acts as the shipowner's representative, ensuring the optimal handling of cargo and the swift turnaround of vessels in port.
**Key Responsibilities**:
- **
Cargo Operations Management**:
- Oversee and coordinate all cargo loading and discharging activities, ensuring the safe and efficient handling of cargo in line with the shipowner’s requirements.
- Work closely with terminal operators, stevedores, and vessel crews to plan and execute loading and unloading procedures.
- Ensure cargo operations are carried out in compliance with all safety regulations, environmental guidelines, and contractual obligations.
- Monitor and report on the condition of cargo before, during, and after loading/discharging, addressing any issues promptly.
- ** Vessel Turnaround and Scheduling**:
- Manage the scheduling and turnaround of vessels to minimize port stay and avoid delays.
- Liaise with port authorities and terminal operators to secure berth allocation and coordinate vessel movements.
- Ensure timely communication with the shipowner regarding the progress of cargo operations and any potential delays or issues.
- ** Safety and Compliance**:
- Implement and enforce safety protocols during cargo handling operations to ensure the safety of personnel and the integrity of the cargo.
- Conduct regular safety inspections and ensure all parties adhere to maritime laws and regulations.
- Prepare and submit necessary documentation and reports to regulatory bodies on behalf of the shipowner.
- ** Stakeholder Coordination**:
- Act as the primary point of contact between the shipowner, terminal operators, port authorities, and vessel masters.
- Coordinate with agents and other stakeholders to ensure smooth operations and resolve any operational challenges.
- Facilitate effective communication between the shipowner and other parties involved in port operations.
- ** Cost Management and Reporting**:
- Monitor and control costs associated with cargo operations, ensuring efficient use of resources.
- Report on operational expenses, cargo handling performance, and any issues encountered during operations.
- Assist the shipowner in negotiating contracts with terminal operators and service providers to optimize costs and service quality.
- ** Emergency Response**:
- Lead the response to any incidents or emergencies during cargo operations, coordinating with relevant authorities and stakeholders.
- Ensure proper documentation and reporting of any incidents and take corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.

**Qualifications**:
- **
Education**:
- Bachelor's degree in Marine Engineering, Nautical Science, or a related field. A master’s degree or additional maritime certifications are preferred.
- ** Experience**:
- Minimum of five years of experience in cargo operations, marine management, or a similar role.
- Strong understanding of cargo handling procedures, maritime laws, and port operations in India and Bangladesh.
- Experience working with terminal operators, stevedores, and port authorities in India and Bangladesh.
- ** Skills**:
- Excellent leadership and team management skills.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Effective communication and negotiation skills.
- Proficiency in using port management and cargo handling software.
- ** Certifications**:
- Valid STCW certification and other relevant maritime certifications.
- ** Working Conditions**:
- This position may require working in various weather conditions and the ability to respond to operational issues during off-hours.
- The role involves both office work and frequent on-site inspections and interactions at the port.
