Role and Responsibilities
- Counselors are tasked with helping students achieve academic goals and personal, social, and professional development.
- When students begin to develop their academic self-concept and their feelings of competence and confidence as learners. They are beginning to develop decision-making, communication and life skills, as well as and character values.
- Counselors work closely with parents/guardians of problematic students and may work with students in either individual or group settings, or both. They may meet students/parents in person or by phone. Counselors work collaboratively with parents and teachers to decide on what action needs to be taken to address issues interfering with a student’s learning process. These issues may be academic or social. The counselor also helps with crisis intervention.
- Counselors must be able to maintain computer databases related to students' records and counseling progress
- Counseling programs provide education, prevention and intervention services, which are integrated into all aspects of children’s lives.
- Intervene in dangerous, challenging, or stressful situations to provide a peaceful, safe environment.
- Early identification and intervention of children’s academic and personal/social needs is essential in removing barriers to learning and in promoting academic achievement.
- The knowledge, attitudes and skills that students acquire in the areas of academic, career and personal/social development during these elementary years serve as the foundation for future success.
- Individual counseling
- The school counselor works with students on an individual basis to help meet the needs of a child. Small group counseling
- The school counselor offers a wide range of small groups focusing on many topics. Topics are decided by needs of students and vary based on need.
- Counselor teaches lessons to classes on a regular basis. There are domains that counselors focus on: personal/social, academic achievement, Life skills and career development.
- Identify and communicate special needs and mental health challenges.
- Character education is a large part of the curriculum. The character traits focused on throughout the year are respect, responsibility, integrity, independence, gratitude, caring, justice/fairness, honesty/trustworthiness, self-discipline, cooperation, etc.
