Job Description

A PE Teacher, or Physical Education Teacher is responsible for teaching physical education and sports to school children. Their duties include planning and leading PE lessons, getting students to compete in sporting events and evaluating their performance.

PE Teacher duties and responsibilities

PE Teachers are responsible for advancing their students' physical ability and knowledge of sports. They are responsible for the welfare of their students and for ensuring that students can gain the qualifications they need to advance their education or their desired career paths after school. Their key duties and responsibilities include:

Supervising practical PE lessons, including both indoor and outdoor classesEnsuring that children compete to their ability level and aren't exposed to unnecessary injury or illness through school sportsMotivating school children to take up new sports or athletic pursuitsEvaluating the performance of students throughout the school yearAttending parents' evenings and providing parents with comprehensive reports on their child's progressTraining and coaching school sports teams to compete and succeed in nation-wide eventsTransporting individual competitors, school teams and other teachers to and from school sporting eventsEnsuring that students pass their practical and theoretical PE exams

PE Teacher skills and qualifications

A successful PE Teachers will have various prerequisite skills and teaching qualifications and a passion for sports. They have expert knowledge of a wide variety of sports, sporting tactics and physical training programmes. PE Teachers also need to enjoy working with students and have excellent organisation, communication and teaching skills. Their main skills and qualifications include:

Up-to-date knowledge of the UK PE curriculumKnowledge of PE examination processes and requirements for GCSE and A-levelKnowledge of physical exercises, stretching, nutrition and sports recoveryKnowledge of different rules and regulations for sports, including athletics and team sportsQualified Teacher Status (QTS)Ability to pass an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check to work with childrenBasic knowledge of first aid and recognised first-aid certificateA full UK driving license
