Security Engineer

You are a highly skilled and motivated security professional with a deep passion for offensive security and penetration testing. With a background in cybersecurity and extensive experience in identifying and exploiting vulnerabilities, you possess a keen understanding of the threat landscape and hacker methodologies. Your qualifications include certifications such as CEH, OSCP, OSCE, or equivalent, and you have a proven track record of conducting successful penetration tests and red team engagements. Your analytical mindset, creative problem-solving abilities, and excellent communication skills make you an ideal fit for this role, as you can effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams to enhance our security posture.
The Opportunity
WatchGuard is growing its internal security operations with an expanded team focused on testing our security controls. This team is responsible for conducting regular penetration testing engagements against critical environments to validate controls and meet compliance requirements. This team is also responsible for developing and executing red team engagements to proactively test WatchGuard’s security controls and incident response capabilities. As a member of the Security Operations organization, you will help shape WatchGuard’s cybersecurity strategy by clearly communicating control gaps and risk to cross-department stakeholders. Your coworkers will depend on you to help prioritize remediation activities that improve WatchGuard’s security and reduce risk.
As a Security Engineer on the Red Team, you will be constantly learning, staying up to date on the latest attacker tools and techniques as well as defensive controls. You must be comfortable with automating activities wherever possible to succeed. This is an engineering minded team that must prioritize their work using a data-driven approach based off risk analysis, threat intelligence, and compliance requirements.
A Day in the Life
As a Security Engineer on the Red Team, you will play a critical role in assessing and improving the security of WatchGuard’s applications, systems and infrastructure. Reporting to Security Operations management, you will plan and execute red team exercises, simulate advanced persistent threats, and identify vulnerabilities before malicious actors can exploit them. You will also help scope and execute targeted penetration testing that meets WatchGuard’s compliance requirements including ISO 27001:2022 and PCI DSS 4.0. Your responsibilities will include developing and utilizing custom tools, documenting findings, and providing actionable recommendations to close security gaps and manage risk. You will regularly collaborate with WatchGuard’s Computer Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT) to enhance incident response strategies and ensure continuous improvement of our security measures.

Within One Month You Will...
- Become familiar with the company's security policies, controls, and infrastructure.
- Gain access to relevant systems and tools used for penetration testing and red team activities.
- Meet with key stakeholders and team members to understand ongoing projects and security priorities.
- Conduct a preliminary assessment of the current security posture and identify immediate areas of concern.
Within Three Months You Will...
- Plan and execute your first red team exercise, simulating real-world attack scenarios to test our defenses.
- Plan and execute your first targeted penetration test against WatchGuard environments.
- Develop and refine custom scripts and tools to aid in penetration testing activities.
- Collaborate with the Blue Team (WatchGuard CSIRT) to analyze findings and suggest remediation strategies for identified vulnerabilities.
- Present detailed reports on red team activities to the CSO and other stakeholders, outlining both technical findings and strategic recommendations.
Within Six Months You Will...
- Lead multiple red team and penetration testing engagements, continuously challenging and improving the organization's security posture.
- Establish a comprehensive red team testing schedule, ensuring regular assessments of critical systems and applications.
- Mentor junior team members, sharing your expertise and promoting a culture of security awareness and continuous learning.
- Contribute to the development of long-term security strategies, leveraging insights gained from red team activities to guide future initiatives.
