Application Scientist

As an Application Scientist, you will be the bridge between our innovative scientific instruments and the end users, ensuring they are equipped with the knowledge and support to fully leverage the technology. Your responsibilities will include conducting product demonstrations, training users, and providing ongoing technical assistance. You’ll work closely with both the sales team and R&D, contributing to product development by offering insights based on user feedback and market trends. This role also involves attending conferences, preparing technical presentations, and collaborating with key stakeholders in academia and industry.

Today, SMS companies operate worldwide, with five subsidiaries across both instrumentation branches and contract laboratories. The available role is based at SMS Instruments Pvt Ltd in Hyderabad, India, and offers the opportunity to join a dynamic and growing team.
Responsibilities
- Understanding the needs of researchers and scientists in various fields to ensure that the instruments and analysis outcome meets their requirements. This may involve troubleshooting issues, providing guidance on instrument usage, and helping customers achieve their research or analytical goals.
- Provide training and educational resources to customers, helping them understand how to use instruments effectively and get the most value from them.
- Assist customers with data analysis and interpretation.
- Provide scientific leadership in the field of vapor sorption studies (DVS and IGC methods), and solid-state characterization.
- Conduct testing of prospective customer samples and generate comprehensive scientific sample analysis reports.
- Deliver international scientific presentations through posters, oral presentations, and webinars. participate in conferences, workshops, and seminars, to present the company’s products and provide insights into their applications.
- Offer feedback and insights to improve sales and business strategies.
- Author scientific papers, reports, and progress reports.
- Visit potential future customers internationally, partnering with sales staff.
- Support sales efforts by collaborating with the marketing team.
- Additional duties as required or assigned.
- Pre Sales-and post-sales support to our clients.
Required Skills & Experience
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to troubleshoot and optimize applications.
- Experience in designing and conducting experiments, collecting, and analysing data, and drawing meaningful conclusions.
- The ability to identify and solve technical challenges and issues related to applications and products.
- Experience and expertise in the physical characterization of solid-state materials.
- Experience with Windows® Window 7/10/11 and Microsoft Office 2016 or later office suites or later operating systems.
- Experience in handling software used for documentation viz. Amplelogic, ELN, Odoo etc.
- Comfortable presenting in front of customers and events
Preferred Skills
- Expertise in thermal analysis, advanced materials characterization, and vapor sorption studies (DVS and IGC methods preferred).
- Effective communication skills, including the ability to deliver scientific lectures and presentations. Excellent communication skills are crucial, as application scientists often need to explain complex scientific concepts to customers, sometimes even to non-scientific audiences. Writing skills for preparing reports, documentation, and research papers.
- Knowledge of pharmaceutical, porous, or complex organic materials is advantageous.
- Collaboration with cross-functional teams, like engineers, researchers, product managers, and sales teams. Being a team player is essential. Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Proficiency in English for presentations.
- Additional training will be provided on an "as-needed" basis.
Qualifications
The position requires a person with a minimum of Master’s degree (MSc, MEng or MPhil.) or a PhD in Chemical Engineering or Applied Chemistry or Physical Chemistry or a related discipline.
