Job Purpose:
The Operation Theater Manager is responsible for the overall management of the hospital’s operation theater (OT) facilities. This includes ensuring the efficient and smooth functioning of surgical operations, maintaining high standards of patient safety, managing OT staff, coordinating with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nursing, and other medical teams. The manager ensures compliance with health regulations, safety standards, and hospital policies.
Key Responsibilities:
Operational Management:
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the operation theaters.
- Ensure all equipment and tools in the OT are operational and available for use.
- Ensure strict adherence to the hospital's operational protocols and hygiene standards.
- Coordinate and schedule surgeries in consultation with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nursing teams.
- Supervise and manage the OT team, including nurses, technicians, and support staff.
- Ensure efficient utilization of OT resources (e.g., rooms, equipment, staff) while minimizing downtime.
Patient Care & Safety:
- Ensure that patient safety protocols are followed, including pre-operative assessments, infection control practices, and post-operative care.
- Oversee sterilization procedures and ensure that surgical instruments are properly cleaned and sanitized.
- Ensure proper patient records are maintained and confidentiality is upheld.
Staff Management:
- Recruit, train, and evaluate OT staff, including nurses, assistants, and technicians.
- Organize regular training sessions to keep the OT staff updated on the latest techniques, technologies, and safety practices.
- Ensure the optimal deployment of OT staff based on the surgical schedule.
- Conduct performance appraisals and address any performance-related concerns.
Compliance & Regulations:
- Ensure that the operation theaters comply with all relevant health and safety regulations, as well as national and international standards.
- Prepare and manage audits for infection control, equipment checks, and procedural compliance.
- Maintain an up-to-date inventory of all OT equipment and supplies and ensure timely ordering and stock management.
Budgeting and Resource Management:
- Prepare and manage the OT budget, ensuring efficient utilization of resources.
- Monitor and report on OT expenditure, identifying opportunities for cost savings without compromising quality.
- Oversee the maintenance and calibration of surgical equipment and instruments.
Collaboration & Communication:
- Work closely with other hospital departments (e.g., anesthesia, medical, and nursing) to ensure seamless surgical processes.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for the surgical team, patients, and families for operational concerns related to the OT.
- Address and resolve any issues or conflicts within the OT team or with other hospital departments.
Quality Improvement:
- Implement quality improvement initiatives to enhance surgical outcomes, patient satisfaction, and OT efficiency.
- Collect and analyze data on OT performance and patient outcomes, and use this information to drive improvements.
- Participate in hospital committees focused on surgical services, patient safety, and infection control.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Education:
- A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Healthcare Administration, Nursing, or a related field.
- Additional certifications in Operation Theater Management or Surgery-related programs are advantageous.
- Experience:
- At least 6–8 years of experience in managing operation theaters in a hospital setting.
- Proven leadership experience in a healthcare environment, with direct involvement in staff supervision and operational management.
- Knowledge of healthcare regulations, infection control practices, and safety standards in the operating room.
- Skills:
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work with multidisciplinary teams.
- Proficient in hospital management software and OT-related technology.
- Ability to work under pressure and handle emergencies calmly.
- Sound decision-making skills with a focus on patient safety.
